It’s been a little while since I have done a book haul post, but it thought it would be a good time to look at some of the great books I have received recently. I’ve managed to get some really intriguing reads in the last two weeks from the publishers, and I also picked up a couple of books that I have been really keen on getting. All of these seem pretty amazing and I am really looking forward to reading all of them.

Warrior of the Altaii by Robert Jordan

Warrior of the Altaii Cover

Possibly the book that I have been looking forward to the most. Thanks to his Wheel of Time series Robert Jordan is a legendary fantasy author and I am curious to find out what his earlier writings were like.

The Night Fire by Michael Connelly

The latest book from bestselling author Michael Connelly, The Night Fire continues the combined adventures of Ballard and Bosch that were started in Connelly’s previous book Dark Sacred Night. This sounds like a really intriguing mystery and it should be pretty amazing.

The Name Of All Things by Jenn Lyons

This is the second book in Lyons’ A Chorus of Dragons series that started earlier in 2019 with The Ruin of Kings. I have been meaning to read The Ruin of Kings all year, and I might try and read it first before getting onto this second book.

A Minute to Midnight by David Baldacci

A Minute to Midnight Cover.png

Another compelling sounding mystery. Baldacci has been on a real writing tear this year and I really need to read some of his books.

Funny Bones Edited by Kate and Joel Temple and Oliver Phommavanh

This one is a funny book for a good cause. Over 100 Australian authors, illustrators and comedians have contributed short stories, jokes and drawings to this book, with all royalties from it going to War Child Australia. I grew up with a number of the contributors and this should prove to be a great book for younger readers.

Duplicity by Richard Evans

This is another book that I have really been looking forward to for a while. Evans’ first book in The Democracy trilogy, Deceit, was an outstanding Australian political thriller and was one of my favourite books from last year. As a result, I have high hopes for this second entry in the series and cannot wait to read it.

Sword of Kings by Bernard Cornwell

The latest book from one of my top ten favourite authors, there was no way I was not going to get a copy of Sword of Kings. This series is a pretty outstanding example of historical fiction, and I have been looking forward to Sword of Kings ever since I read the previous book in the series, War of the Wolf. I already know that I am going to love this and I am very excited to check it out.

Its been a little quiet on the new book front lately, but I have managed to obtain a few amazing sounding novels over the last couple of weeks. This is a combination of top books I got from some Australian publishers, and a few more books I bought on my Kindle in preparation for an upcoming trip.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

This is an intriguing debut book from a new author that I have been looking forward to for a while. I have actually already finished this book off, and my review for it will be up in a few minutes.

The Man That Got Away by Lynne Truss

The Man That Got Away is another book that I have been looking forward to for a while. I loved the previous book in the series, A Shot in the Dark, and I reckon this is going to be one of the funniest reads of 2019.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire
by Delilah S. Dawson

The first of several awesome sounding Star Wars books that are coming out in the second half of 2019. This should be an interesting read and I am keen to check it out.

The Cruel Stars by John Birmingham

This is a cool new science fiction epic that recently caught me eye. It sounds like it could be pretty amazing and I am sure it is going to be an exciting read.

The Brink by James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth

The sequel to Murray and Wearmouth’s first collaboration, Awakened, The Brink promises to be another fun and exciting horror thriller.

Unleashed by Amy McCulloch

The first book in this series, Jinxed, was one of my favourite young adult books from last year, so I am keen to check out the sequel.

In the last week or so I have had a pretty substantial pile of books rock up which I am very excited to check out. There are some really good books in this lasted haul, including some sequels to several great reads I reviewed last year.

The Queen’s Tiger by Peter Watt

Ok, so I may be slightly biased because this upcoming book quotes one of my Canberra Weekly reviews on the cover, but this is probably the book I was most excited to get. The Queen’s Tiger is the exciting sequel to Australian author Peter Watt’s fantastic piece of historical fiction, The Queen’s Colonial. This should be a pretty epic book, and I hoping to read it well in advance of its release date.

Supernova by Marissa Meyer

Another advanced proof that I am exceedingly happy I got already, Supernova is the final book in Meyer’s Renegades trilogy. I really enjoyed the second entry in this amazing young adult superhero series, Archenemies, and I am keen to see how this trilogy ends. Also, check out how awesome that cover looks, I know I am impressed.

Shepherd by Catherine Jinks

An inriguing sounding Australian historical fiction book. Shepherd is a slightly shorter book than some of the others in my haul, but it sounds like it could be an good read with an unique Australian story behind it.

Magebane by Stephen Aryan

Magebane is the final book in Aryan’s The Age of Dread trilogy, which follows on from his previous The Age of Darkness trilogy. I really enjoyed the previous book in the trilogy, Magefall last year, and it sounds like Magebane is going to be a pretty impressive conclusions to these books.

The Art of Dying by Ambrose Parry

A medical murder mystery Victorian Edinburgh, this could be a fun book to check out.

State of Fear by Tim Ayliffe

This looks like it is going to be a really cool Australian thriller. Ayliffe’s debut novel, The Greater Good, was an excellent piece of Australian fiction last year, and I have high hopes for this sequel.

The Fifth Column by Andrew Gross

The final book I got in this haul is a pretty cool sounding novel. The Fifth Column is a thriller set around potential Nazi spies in 1940’s New York. It sounds really intriguing and I look forward to checking it out.

I have managed to pick up a good number of books in the last two weeks, including some fascinating reads that look like that they are going to be really cool. I actually got a real interesting mixture of books from several different genres and I look forward to checking them all out.

Usagi Yojimbo – Vol. 33: The Hidden by Stan Sakai

Usagi Yojimbo The Hidden Cover
This is the latest volume of the excellent Usagi Yojimbo comic book series, which I am a massive fan of. I have actually read this one already (pretty much the day it came in) and I am hoping to get a review of this one up in the next day or so.

Hudson’s Kill by Paddy Hirsch

This should prove to be a good historical mystery novel. I quite enjoyed Hirsch’s first novel, The Devil’s Half Mile, last year and I am interested to see what he comes up with this time.

The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier

I have been hearing a lot of good buzz around The Harp of Kings and it sounds like it could be one of the best new fantasy books of the year. This is pretty high up on my reading list and should be a good one to check out.

Shatter City by Scott Westerfeld

This is an intriguing sounding young adult science fiction novel with a cool concept.

Deep River by Karl Marlantes

Deep River is a fairly massive historical novel that actually sounds really interesting. Following a Finnish family who settle in America at the start of the 20th century, this looks like it is going to be one of the those novels that follows it’s protagonists for a long period of time and several major historical events.

Evermore by Sara Holland

A very cool sounding young adult fantasy novel, should be a fun one to read.

Pretty Revenge by Emily Liebert

Let us round out this list with this compelling sounding revenge thriller from Emily Liebert. Pretty Revenge sounds like a pretty dark novel, and I am very curious to see what happens in it.

I’ve been lucky enough to receive a small but interesting collection of books in the last week from several publishers. I am extremely excited about a couple of these books, but all of them sound extremely good and I hope I get the chance to check them all out.

Howling Dark by Christopher Ruocchio

This is the book I am probably most excited about. Howling Dark is the sequel to Empire of Silence, one of my favourite books from last year. I have been looking forward to this book for a while, having featured it in one of my Waiting on Wednesdays and my recent Top Ten Most Anticipated July-December 2019 Releases list.

I only just got Howling Dark in the last day and was extremely happy when I received my copy. However, I also got a nice surprise when I saw that Ruocchio mentioned my blog in his acknowledgements. This was an amazing honour and I am glad that he enjoyed my review of his initial book.

I am looking forward to checking out Howling Dark as soon as I can, and I am sure that I will really enjoy it.

The Bone Fire by S. D. Sykes

This is a pretty amazing sounding historical murder mystery. I absolutely love the idea of a murderer stalking a medieval castle while the inhabitants are stuck inside avoiding the plague and I am sure this will make for an incredible story.

Where the Light Enters by Sara Donati

Another interesting sounding murder mystery. At over 600 pages long, Where the Light Enters is a pretty massive read, but I think that it could be worth checking out.

Star Trek: The Captain’s Oath by Christopher L. Bennett

I have been getting into some Star Trek tie-in novels in the last year, including Available Light and The Way to the Stars, and The Captain’s Oath sounds like it could be another enjoyable read.

The Collaborator by Diane Armstrong

The final book I got, The Collaborator, sounds like it is going to be a powerful piece of historical fiction, and I look forward to reading this deep and dramatic narrative.

Overall, I think that this is a pretty good book haul. Each of the titles mentioned above have a lot of potential and it looks like I will have some excellent reading in my future.

I haven’t had the greatest book haul in the last couple of weeks, but I have still managed to pick up a few excellent titles that I am excited to check out.

Star Wars: Thrawn: Treason by Timothy Zahn

Treason is the fourth Star Wars book out so far this year that I have been lucky enough to get my hands on and I have really been looking forward to this book. Not only did I feature it in a Waiting on Wednesday article, but Treason also made my recent Top Ten Most Anticipated July-December 2019 Releases list. I had an amazing time reading and reviewing the previous two books in the Thrawn trilogy, Thrawn and Alliances, and I hope this book contains a satisfying conclusion to the titular character’s story arc.

Salvation Lost by Peter F. Hamilton

This book only just rocked up today and I am extremely happy that I managed to get such an advanced copy of it. Salvation Lost is another book that I featured both in a Waiting on Wednesday entry and in my Top Ten Most Anticipated July-December 2019 Releases list. The first book in the series, Salvation, was easily one of the top books I read in 2018 and I cannot wait to check out the sequel.

Wilder Girls by Rory Power

Wilder Girls is an intriguing sounding young adult thriller and I am looking forward to checking it out.

Blood in the Water by Jack Flynn

This is a pretty cool sounding crime thriller set in the author’s native Boston, should be good.

Knight of Stars by Tom Lloyd

This sounds like a really fun and entertaining fantasy novel and I hope I get the chance to read it.

Uncanny X-Men: Volume 1 – Wolverine and Cyclops by Matthew Rosenberg and Salvador Larroca

Two of the most iconic and antagonistic mutants teaming up again after the X-Men were completely destroyed, yes please!

I managed to get a pretty interesting haul of books in the last week and a half, and figured it was time to share before I get too distracted by the next batch of books I’m hoping to get. The latest haul is a really cool mixture of books, and I am really keen to check them all out when I get a chance.

A Capitol Death by Lindsey Davis

I have been looking forward to this one for a few months and it is the only book on this list I spent some money on. Given how much I loved Pandora’s Boy though, I know I’m going to enjoy this latest book in the Flavia Albia series.

The Need by Helen Phillips

One of the more unusual books I got this week, it sounds like the story looks at alternate realities which could be cool.

This one sounds like a pretty awesome historical fiction novel and it pretty high up on my to-read list at the moment.

Nothing Ventured by Jeffrey Archer

I was really happy to get a copy of the upcoming Jeffrey Archer book Nothing Ventured. His last book, Heads You Win, was a great read and this new book looks really interesting.

Wow, what a week for books. I got an amazing selection from a variety of publishers that I am really excited to read. I also got a couple of books I bought online that I have been looking forward to for a while. This is a fantastic collection and I hope I get to read and review all of them.

Cold Storage by David Koepp

A compelling techno-thriller from one of the screenwriters of Jurassic Park, should be pretty epic.

Ghosts of the Past by Tony Park

Another intriguing sounding piece of Australian fiction. I quite enjoyed Park’s last book, Scent of Fear, and this sounds like it will be an interesting historical adventure.

Angel Mage by Garth Nix

The latest book from bestselling author Garth Nix. I absolutely loved Nix’s Old Kingdom series when I was younger and I a very keen to check out his new series.

The Unforgiving City by Maggie Joel

Another book that dives in Australia’s history. This one should be a really good political thriller.

The Lost Ten by Harry Sidebottom

This is an excellent sounding historical fiction novel that I have been looking forward to for a while. I really loved Sidebottom’s last book, The Last Hour, and this one should hopefully be just as awesome.

God of Broken Things by Cameron Johnston

Yet another one that I have been looking forward to. I really enjoyed Johnston’s debut novel, The Traitor God, and cannot wait to see where Johnston takes this story next.

It’s been a while since I’ve published a book haul, but this has been a really good week for books. Not only have I gotten some amazing books from the publishers, but I also went out and bought a few new books and comics that I am really excited to check out. I am really looking forward to reading all of these and will hopefully reviews them soon.

War of the Bastards by Andrew Shvarts

I have been looking forward to this book for a while now. The second book in this trilogy, City of Bastards, ended on such an epic note and I cannot wait to see how Shvarts wraps up his series.

Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron by Alexander Freed

The second in a batch of upcoming Star Wars books I have been looking forward to, this should be fairly epic.

The Stiehl Assassin by Terry Brooks

The Stiehl Assassin is the third book in Brooks’ The Fall of Shannara series, which started with The Black Elfstone. This is the penultimate book before Brooks ends his iconic Shannara universe and should prove to be pretty interesting.

Commodus by Simon Turney

This looks like a fun one. Commodus is a pretty crazy Roman Emperor and a novel focusing on his life should be very entertaining.

Girl in the Rearview Mirror by Kelsey Rae Dimberg

Alien: Echo by Mira Grant

This is another one that I have been keen to check out for a while. Mira Grant is an amazing horror writer and I am interested to see how she tackles the Alien franchise.

Firefly: The Unification War – Volume 1

Yay, new Firefly tie-in fiction. I have really enjoyed both of the recent Firefly books, Big Damn Hero and The Magnificent Nine, and this new comic series should also be really cool.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: High School is Hell

The first volume of a new Buffy The Vampire Slayer comic book series, which is set in an alternate universe from the television show. This looks really cool and I am very curious to see what they do with such an intriguing story premise.

This sounds like a fun thriller and I am looking forward to reading it. I really enjoyed the latest book in Coulter’s connected series, Paradox.

The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu

I have never really gotten into the Shadowhunter books before, so this should be an interesting part of the series to come into.
