The Bolthole by Peter Papathanasiou (Trade Paperback)

I’ve started reading the excellent Australian crime fiction novel, The Bolthole, this week, and it’s proving to be a fantastic read.  The latest book from author Peter Papathanasiou, The Bolthole is set on Kangaroo Island and focusses on the disappearance of a rich man, while also featuring a battle for the island’s identity.  The Bolthole is so far proving to be a really intriguing novel and I look forward to seeing how it comes together.

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman (Audiobook)

I’m still obsessed with Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and I’ve just started the sixth book in the series, The Eye of the Bedlam Bride.  A very awesome entry in the larger series, The Eye of the Bedlam Bride features a cool new dungeon floor with an interesting concept behind it, and I’m loving how Dinniman is continuing his unique story.  This is one of the longer Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to get through it in the next week.  I look forward to seeing all the cool twists and turns in this new book, and I’m sure it’s going to be so much fun.

Five Found Dead by Sulari Gentill (ebook)

I managed to finish off the cool murder mystery novel, Five Found Dead by Australian author Sulari Gentill this week.  An intriguing crime fiction story set on the Orient Express, Five Found Dead was very fun, and I had a blast Gentill’s clever narrative.

The Butcher’s Masquerade by Matt Dinniman (Audiobook)

I ad an absolute blast with the fifth Dungeon Crawler Carl book, The Butcher’s Masquerade, which is probably my favourite entry in the series at the moment.  Featuring a particularly intense narrative, loaded with shocks, dark moments, and the author’s amazing humour,  The Butcher’s Masquerade was an incredible book that I couldn’t stop listening to.

Death at Booroomba by A. L. Booth

Another outstanding piece of Australian fiction.  Death at Booroomba was an amazing novel, and I’m glad I got the chance to check it out.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Final Vow by M. W. Craven

While I have so many incredible books to read at the moment, I think I’m going to sit down and enjoy The Final Vow by M. W. Craven next.  A very awesome sounding novel that will see Craven’s protagonist face off against a deadly sniper terrorising England, The Final Vow has a ton of potential, and I am very excited to see how the story unfolds, especially after being enthralled by The Mercy Chair last year.  I have a strong feeling that The Final Vow is going to be one of the top books of 2025, and I am extremely excited to see how it unfolds.

I just started reading the cool murder mystery novel, Five Found Dead by Australian author Sulari Gentill.  An intriguing crime fiction story set on the Orient Express, Five Found Dead is proving to be an excellent novel and I look forward to seeing how its captivating mystery unfolds.

The Butcher’s Masquerade by Matt Dinniman (Audiobook)

I’m still powering through Matt Dinniman’s exceptional Dungeon Crawler Carl series, which is so damn good.  I have already made it to the fifth book in the series, The Butcher’s Masquerade, which sets the unlikely protagonists against a new array of dangerous opponents, including professional hunters who specialise in killing dungeon crawlers. Another incredible book and one that I cannot stop listening to, The Butcher’s Masquerade is already proving to be one of my favourite books in this series, and I cannot wait to see where the crazy story goes next.

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman (Audiobook)

Another exceptional entry in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. This was a worthy fourth book in this outstanding series, perfectly following books like Dungeon Crawler Carl and Carl’s Doomsday Scenario, and I instantly started reading the fifth book the second I finished it.

Templar Traitor by Angus Donald (ebook)

I was in the mood for some compelling historical fiction this week, so I decided to start reading the interesting novel Templar Traitor by Angus Donald.  Following the life of a former Templar Knight who ends up joining a rampaging Mongol horde, Templar Traitor was a really cool sounding book that I’m glad I decided to check out.  I’ve made a little progress with this book so far and I’m hoping to finish it off in the next week.

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman (Audiobook)

After having so much damn fun with the previous entries in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, including Dungeon Crawler Carl and Carl’s Doomsday Scenario, I just had to start listening to the fourth book, The Gate of the Feral Gods.  Another very entertaining entry in the series, The Gate of the Feral Gods sees Carl and Princess Donut forced to navigate a whole new elaborate level of the dungeon, while trying to survive the many enemies coming for them. I am having a blast with this book so far, and I cannot wait to see where this crazy series goes next.

The third book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series I have been talking up for the last few weeks.  This entry in the series was a truly epic and outstanding read I couldn’t get enough of.

Two Kinds of Stranger by Steve Cavanagh

The next book I am hoping to read is the awesome upcoming Eddie Flynn novel from Steve Cavanagh, Two Kinds of Stranger.  A cool legal thriller with an intriguing plot idea behind it, I have no doubt Two Kinds of Stranger is going to be a very entertaining read, and I look forward to unwinding its awesome story.

I’ve just started reading the outstanding new novel from Tess Sharpe, No Boby No Crime. Following two young women who are forced to deal with the consequences of a murder they committed as teenagers, No Body No Crime is so far proving to be particularly awesome, and I look forward to unwinding it’s full twisty and clever narrative.

The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Matt Dinniman (Audiobook)

Over the last week or so I’ve gone down into the rabbit hole that is Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and I am absolutely loving it.  Following the remnants of humanity as they are forced to explore a televised fantasy dungeon after the world is destroyed, the Dungeon Crawler Carl books are an awesome LitRPG series that really captures your imagination.  I absolutely blew through the first two books in the series and now I’m on the third book, The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook, which is just as epic as the previous entries.  Featuring a really cool new level to explore and loaded with the author’s trademark humour, The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook is an incredible and ultra fun novel, especially on audiobook.

I managed to finish off the debut novel of Australian author Mikayla Bridge, Of Flame and Fury which was an excellent fantasy novel about phoenix racing that I really enjoyed.

Three Shattered Souls by Mai Corland

If I get through The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook this week, I think I might start listening to the audiobook version of Three Shattered Souls by Mai Corland.  The third and final book in the Broken Blades trilogy (Five Broken Blades and Four Ruined Realms), Three Shattered Souls looks set to be an amazing novel, and I cannot wait to see how this elaborate series comes to an end.

The debut novel of Australian author Mikayla Bridge, Of Flame and Fury is a very fun sounding fantasy novel about phoenix racing.  Sure to be a fiery read, I’m hoping to get through Of Flame and Fury in the next couple of days.

I was in the mood for something a little different this week, so I ended up finally reading Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman, a book that I have heard a lot of awesome things about.  Unsurprisingly considering my obvious obsession for weird and wacky books, I am absolutely loving Dungeon Crawler Carl, and I am currently powering through the audiobook version of it.  I’m actually hoping to finish it off today, and I cannot wait to write something about this hilarious and amazing read.

I have just started reading the amazing Australian historical fiction novel, Sins of the Fathers by John Byrnes. Following two feuding families as they try to kill each other for the sins of their respective fathers in the chaotic history of 1910s Australia, Sins of the Fathers is proving to be an excellent novel, and a wonderful third book from Byrnes after Headland and The Youngest Son.

Grave Danger by James Grippando (Audiobook)

I decided to dive into the audiobook version of the intriguing legal thriller Grave Danger by James Grippando this week, especially after having so much fun last year with Goodbye Girl. The 19th Jack Swyteck novel, Grave Danger features a deeply compelling central case involving a complex custody case, political activism and fraught relations. I have made a fair bit of progress on Grave Danger this week and I am really enjoying its complex and captivating narrative.

I finished off the excellent Australian crime fiction novel Broke Road by Matthew Spencer this week.  The sequel to his fantastic debut, Black River, Broke Road was a brilliant outback murder mystery that I couldn’t get enough of.  A very impressive sequel from a rising Australian author.

Warhammer 40,000: Fulgrim: The Perfect Son by Jude Reid (Audiobook)

I also finished off the awesome Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Fulgrim: The Perfect Son by Jude Reid this week. Following members of the hedonistic and corrupt Emperor’s Children Chaos Space Marines Legion as they embark on siege on behalf of their dark master, The Perfect Son was one of Reid’s best books yet and featured a brutal and compelling plot.  Highly recommended.

The Medici Return by Steve Berry

I’ve got several excellent books I can dive into next, but I think I might try and read the latest Cotton Malone novel by Steve Berry, The Medici Return.  Featuring another elaborate historical conspiracy, The Medici Return sounds like a ton of fun, and I have been meaning to check it out for a while.  I will have to see how I go getting onto this, but I have no doubt I will have an amazing time with this book at some point.

If I manage to finish off Grave Danger this week, I’m planning to start the over-the-top thriller Badlands on audiobook next. Bringing back the writing team of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child for another awesome thriller, Badlands will feature a very unique mystery as people start dying while holding Native American artefacts. I have no doubt this is going to be an incredible and very exciting novel and I cannot wait to see how fun things get.

I just started reading the excellent Australian crime fiction novel Broke Road by Matthew Spencer.  The sequel to his fantastic debut, Black River, Broke Road sets up another compelling murder mystery, this time out in rural Australia. I have made a bit of progress with Broke Road so far and it is proving to be an intriguing and compelling piece of crime fiction. I look forward to unwinding the full case this week, and I cannot wait to see how it turns out.

Following members of the hedonistic and corrupt Emperor’s Children Chaos Space Marines Legion as they embark on siege on behalf of their dark master, The Perfect Son looks set to be an intriguing and entertaining Warhammer 40,000 novel loaded with secrets and betrayal. I’ve made a fair amount of progress on The Perfect Son, and it is proving to be a particularly impressive piece of Warhammer 40,000 fiction, and one of Reid’s best books yet.

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson (ebook)

I decided to check out the interesting fantasy debut, The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson this week, and boy was it particularly impressive. Featuring a unique fantasy narrative, loaded with murder, intrigue and conspiracy, The Raven Scholar was an outstanding novel, and one I’m hoping to gush about very soon.

Sins of the Fathers by John Byrnes

I’m hoping to check out the amazing Australian historical fiction novel, Sins of the Fathers by John Byrnes next. Warhammer 40,000: Fulgrim: The Perfect Son by Jude Reid (Audiobook)

After highlighting some of my favourite Warhammer 40,000 novels earlier this week, I was keen to return to this awesome grimdark franchise and decided to check out one of the more intriguing recent releases from it, with Fulgrim: The Perfect Son by Jude Reid. Following members of the hedonistic and corrupt Emperor’s Children Chaos Space Marines Legion as they embark on siege on behalf of their dark master, The Perfect Son looks set to be an intriguing and entertaining Warhammer 40,000 novel loaded with secrets and betrayal. I’ve only just started listening to this audiobook, but it is so far very intense and interesting.  I have no doubt I am going to have a great time with The Perfect Son, especially as some of Reid’s previous Warhammer 40,000 novels, such as Creed: Ashes of Cadia and Daemonbreaker, were a ton of fun.

Nightshade by Michael Connelly (ebook)

I absolutely powered through the new Michael Connelly novel; Nightshade, last week and it was such a great read. Following an interesting new Connelly protagonist who is forced to investigate a murder on Catalina Island, Nightshade is another amazing book from Connelly that had me hooked very early one. An outstanding and highly recommend novel from one of the very best crime fiction authors.

Never Flinch by Stephen King (audiobook)

I also managed to finally finish off the new Stephen King novel, Never Flinch.  Featuring one of the authors more compelling protagonists, Holly Gibney (from books like Mr. Mercedes, The Outsider and Holly), Never Flinch is a gripping novel that pits Holly against both a killer planning to murder 14 people and a disturbed stalker fixated on murdering a women’s rights activist.  Easily one of my favourite books of 2025 so far, Never Flinch was such an incredible read and I’m still reeling from the tense finale.

The Malevolent Eight by Sebastien de Castell (ebook)

I spent a good chunk of this week reading the sounding dark fantasy novel, The Malevolent Eight by Sebastien de Castell, and boy was it something special.  The sequel to de Castell’s outstanding The Malevolent Seven, The Malevolent Eight follows the author’s unlikely band of murderous magic heroes as they inexpertly try to save the world. The result was one of the funniest and most insane books I have ever read, and I am still chuckling at some of the outrageous jokes.  I’m hoping to get a review up for this book soon, but make sure to check it out if you’re in the mood for a very, very fun fantasy novel.

Battle Mountain by C. J. Box

I have several interesting books on my to-read list that I might check out next, but the one I think I’ll start with is the awesome thriller Battle Mountain by C. J. Box.  The 25th entry in the author’s long-running Joe Pickett series, Battle Mountain will follow on from the tragic events of the previous book, Three-Inch Teeth and see the vengeful protagonists dragged into another deadly confrontation.  I already know I’m going to have a lot of fun with Battle Mountain, and I look forward to seeing how everything turns out.

I just started to read the new Michael Connelly novel; Nightshade and I have already made a descent amount of progress on it.  Following an interesting new Connelly protagonist who is forced to investigate a murder on Catalina Island, Nightshade is another amazing read from Connelly, and I am already pretty hooked on its cool mystery.  I fully expect to power through Nightshade in the next couple of days and I cannot wait to see how it comes together.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me by Django Wexler (Trade Paperback)

I had a lot of fun reading the hilarious fantasy novel, Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me by Django Wexler this week.  The sequel to the amazing and deeply funny How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me was another zany and clever read that had me laughing the entire way through.  Highly recommended.

I have a few interesting books to check out at the moment, but I think I’ll probably start reading the awesome sounding dark fantasy novel, The Malevolent Eight by Sebastien de Castell.  The sequel to de Castell’s outstanding The Malevolent Seven, The Malevolent Eight will follow the author’s unlikely band of murderous magic users, who are forced to play the hero in order to save the world.  I had a ton of fun with The Malevolent Seven, and I cannot wait to see how de Castell continues his cool story.

What are you currently reading:

Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me by Django Wexler (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the hilarious fantasy novel, Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me by Django Wexler.  The sequel to the amazing and deeply funny How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, Everybody Wants to Rule the World Except Me sees the new titular Dark Lord try to save the humans she is supposed to conquer, all while trying to survive her own minions.  I’ve only made a little progress on this book so far, but it is already quite funny, and I know I’m going to love every second I spend reading it.

Never Flinch by Stephen King (audiobook)

I also just started listening to the new Stephen King novel, Never Flinch.  Featuring one of the authors more compelling protagonists, Holly Gibney (from books like Mr. Mercedes, The Outsider and Holly), Never Flinch will pit her against some dangerous new foes, as she tries to catch a killer planning to murder 14 people, while also protecting a women’s rights activist from a stalker.  I have had an exceptional time with King’s recent crime fiction novels, and I have no doubt that Never Flinch is going to be one of the top books of 2025.

What did you recently finish reading?

Whisper in the Wind by Luke Arnold (Trade Paperback)

I ended up having a wonderful time getting through the epic urban fantasy novel, Whisper in the Wind by Luke Arnold this week.  An exceptional addition to the author’s Fetch Phillips series, Whisper in the Wind was a brilliant novel that comes very highly recommended, especially as Arnold continues to evolve as an author and produces an outstanding mystery in his complex fantasy world.

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie (Audiobook)

I finally managed to finish off the epic and outrageous dark fantasy novel, The Devils by Joe Abercrombie, this week, and boy was it something special.  One of my most anticipated fantasy novels of 2025, The Devils followed a mismatched group of monsters as they try to survive a dark and magic-filled alternate medieval Europe and place an unlikely princess on the throne of Troy.  Wildy entertaining and deliciously over-the-top, The Devils was so damn good, and I loved every single second I spend listening to it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Nightshade by Michael Connelly

The next book I am planning to check out is the new Michael Connelly novel, Nightshade.  Following an interesting new protagonist who is forced to investigate a murder on an isolated and iconic Californian island, Nightshade should be another amazing read from Connelly, who has great impressed me over the years with his exceptional crime fiction novels.
