I have not made a lot of progress on Viral since last week as I have been mostly focusing on getting through some audiobooks.  I will try to finish it off in the next few days as I am curious where this cool medical thriller is going.

The Bone Ship’s Wake by R. J. Barker (Audiobook)

The Bone Ship's Wake Cover

I finally got the opportunity to start The Bone Ship’s Wake by R. J. Barker, one of my most anticipated releases of 2021The Bone Ship’s Wake is the third and final book in The Tide Child trilogy, and follows on from the outstanding The Bone Ships and Call of the Bone Ships, both of which were exceptional five-star reads.  I only just started listening to this book a few minutes ago, but I am already pretty hooked on its intense and compelling dark fantasy story about bone ships, revolutions and sea dragons.  I cannot wait to see what impressive twists and unique fantasy elements that Barker throws into this novel but it is sure to be one of the best novels of the year.

Viral by Robin Cook (Trade Paperback)

I just started this intriguing novel from the master of the medical thriller, Robin Cook.  Viral features a compelling and relatable look at an outbreak of a viral infection. However, it also takes a look at the lack of affordable health care, and the lengths some people will go to get justice.  A fast-paced and detailed novel, I am hoping to get through this one quickly.

The Pariah by Anthony Ryan (Audiobook)

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman (Audiobook)

I did manage to start the latest Richard Osman novel, The Man Who Died Twice, this week.  The sequel to the outstanding The Thursday Murder Club (one of the best books, audiobooks and debuts of 2020), this second book places the elderly Thursday Murder Club in the way of criminals, spies and notorious ex-husbands. I am about halfway through at the moment, and so far The Man Who Died Twice is turning out to be a cracking read.

The Wisdom of Crowds by Joe Abercrombie (Audiobook)

The Wisdom of Crowds Cover

I was very excited to start the audiobook version of The Wisdom of Crowds by Joe Abercrombie this week.  The Wisdom of Crowds is the third and final book in The Age of Madness trilogy, which has so far featured the excellent grimdark fantasy novels A Little Hatred and The Trouble With Peace.  This was one of my most anticipated reads for 2021 and so far it has not disappointed, continuing the awesome story from the first two books and placing most of the characters in the middle of a brutal peasant uprising.  I am making some good progress with this audiobook and I deeply excited to find out how Abercrombie will end this incredible trilogy.

I just started the latest exciting thriller from Australian author Tony Park, Blood Trail, who once again sets a compelling story within the nature reserves of Africa.  This novel is pretty cool so far, and I am enjoy the interesting tale of anti-poachers who are up against local witchcraft and the negative impacts of COVID-19.  I am hoping to get through this book pretty quickly and it should be a fun read.

Starlight Enclave by R. A. Salvatore (Audiobook)

Billy Summers by Stephen King (Trade Paperback)

Billy Summer Cover

After deeply enjoying Stephen King’s other 2021 release, Later, earlier this year, I have finally been able to dive into his latest book, Billy Summers.  This new novel follows the titular Billy Summers, a hitman with a moral code, who takes one final job.  I have only just started this book, but so far King is setting up a rather intriguing tale.  I look forward to seeing where this awesome narrative goes, and it should prove to be really cool.

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix (Audiobook)

The Final Girl Support Group Cover

I had been hearing some good things about The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix, so I thought I would check it out.  This fascinating novel follows several “final girls”, the victorious survivors of some of your favourite slasher movies, and acts as a bit of a deconstruction of the horror/slasher genre.  I am making some decent progress on this book, and it has a really cool story to it.  I cannot wait to see what awesome ending Hendrix has come up with, and I reckon it will be extremely fun.

She Who Became the Sun is the debut novel from Australian author Shelley Parker-Chan and it follows a young woman in 14th century China who steals her brother’s identity in order to survive and forge her own destiny.  I am around 100 pages in at the moment and I am quickly becoming addicted to the awesome and compelling story it contains. Parker-Chan is a very talented author and I look forward to seeing how this outstanding novel ends.

I just started reading State of Fear by Tim Ayliffe, an Australian thriller that originally came out in 2019 and which serves as a sequel to his debut novel, The Greater Good.  I have plans to read Ayliffe third book, The Enemy Within, in the next couple of weeks, so I thought it would be worth my while to check out this bridging novel first.  State of Fear, which details a traumatized reporter attempted to stop the terrorist who kidnapped him years before, has a very strong start to it, and I am already really getting into this excellent book

Star Wars: The High Republic: The Rising Storm by Scott Cavan (Audiobook)

Star Wars - The Rising Storm Cover

I am currently making some great progress with the latest entry in The High Republic range of Star Wars fiction, The Rising Storm by Cavan Scott.  This latest novel, which follows on from the events of Light of the Jedi, is a pretty epic read, which highlights the unique chaos and battles that occurred hundreds of years before the events of the Star Wars film franchise.  Scott, who previously wrote the great audiodrama Dooku: Jedi Lost, has crafted together a pretty impressive story in The Rising Storm, and I cannot wait to see how this fantastic tale concludes.
