So, let’s get to it.

Downfall by Louise Carey (Trade Paperback)

Downfall Cover

I have just started reading the amazing science fiction thriller, Downfall by Louise Carey.  The third and final book in Carey’s debut Inscape series, Downfall follows on from the fantastic books Inscape and Outcast and follows a small group of cyperpunk rebels as they attempt to save an entire city from the malign control of an evil corporation.  I have made a descent amount of progress on Downfall so far and it is proving to be an excellent and exciting read that perfectly follows on from Outcast’s great cliffhanger ending.  I am very excited to see how this entire trilogy ends and it should end up being an exceptional overall book

Warhammer 40,000: Hereticus by Dan Abnett (Audiobook)

Warhammer 40,000 - Hereticus Cover

After how epic the first two books in Dan Abnett’s incredible and iconic Eisenhorn trilogy turned out, there was no way I could leave this series unfinished, so I just started listening to the third and final book Hereticus.  An intriguing and powerful conclusion to the complex stories told in Xenos and Malleus, Hereticus shows Inquisitor Eisenhorn’s next major adventure, one that will tip him over the edge and make him the very thing that he has sworn to fight.  I have made a fair bit of progress on this book so far, and I am absolutely loving it, especially after that intense and heartbreaking opening sequence.  I have no doubt that the rest of Hereticus is going to be outstanding and I look forward to seeing just how far the protagonist falls.

#MurderFunding by Gretchen McNeil (Hardcover)

#MurderFunding Cover

After having it on my to-read list for years, this week I finally started reading the awesome young adult thriller, #MurderFunding by Gretchen McNeil.  The bloody sequel to the outstanding novel, #MurderTrending (which also had a prequel, #NoEscape), #MurderFunding deals with the insane consequences of the first book, while a nefarious group organize a new, bloody reality tv show.  I have made a bit of progress with this book in the last couple of days, and so far it is proving to be a very fun and compelling read.  I will hopefully finish it off by the end of the week and I am looking forward to seeing what insanity McNeil loaded into this fantastic novel.

Warhammer 40,000 - Malleus Cover

After absolutely loving the first book in Dan Abnett’s Eisenhorn series, Xenos, I just had to see how the story continued so I started reading the intense and brilliant Malleus.  Continuing the adventures of the determined Inquisitor Eisenhorn, Malleus is an incredible read, loaded with action, intrigue, and a thrilling plot of galaxy-spanning corruption.  Abnett is widely considered one of the best Warhammer 40,000 authors for a reason, and this exceptional novel looks set to get another five-star rating from me.

The Voyage of the Forgotten by Nick Martell (Audiobook)

The Voyage of the Forgotten Cover

I finally got a chance to start listening to one of my most anticipated books of 2022, with The Voyage of the Forgotten by Nick Martell.  The third and final book in Martell’s The Legacy of the Mercenary Kings trilogy, The Voyage of the Forgotten continues the adventures of reluctant hero Michael Kingman, who finds himself in the middle of a secret war between hidden immortals.  I only just started this audiobook a few minutes ago, but I am having a great time with it, especially as there are some outstanding details up front.  I already know that I am going to love this book, especially after I have had such an incredible time with this series and both of the preceding books, The Kingdom of Liars (one of my favourite booksaudiobooks and debuts of 2020) and The Two-Faced Queen (one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2021). I was in the mood for some fantasy fun, so I started to read the copy of Fool’s Gold by Jon Hollins that I picked up a few months ago.  The first book in The Dragon Lords series, Fool’s Gold is an entertaining and comedic fantasy, set in a land conquered by dragons, who oppress the people and steal all their money.  This first book follows a desperate, ragtag team of adventurers who decided to do the impossible and steal the dragon’s money.  However, none of their plans ever work out the way they want and this resolves in a series of misunderstandings and inadvertent successes.  I am having an outstanding time reading this amusing fantasy read and I have already made a good amount of progress on it.  I am hoping to finish it off in the next day or so and I cannot wait to see how the craziness ends.

I ended up having an exceptional time reading Kasrkin, which isn’t really a surprise considering how strong the Warhammer 40,000 books have been in 2022.  There are some great twists and reveals contained within this awesome book and I was really impressed with where Albert took Kasrkin’s plot.  A highly recommended read, I will hopefully get a review for it up soon.

In the Shadow of Lightning by Brian McClellan (Audiobook)

In the Shadow of Lightning Cover

I am also still getting through In the Shadow of Lightning by Brian McClellan, and I am just a bit over halfway through the audiobook version of it at the moment.  I am really regretting not listening to this outstanding book sooner as it is proving to be quite an epic read.  While I knew I would probably have a great time with this novel, especially after how impressive his previous book, Promise of Blood turned out, I am still blown away by how compelling and addictive In the Shadow of Lightning is.  Set in a new fantasy realm where magic is contained in glass, In the Shadow of Lightning has a great blend of intrigue, politics, action and character development, and I am absolutely loving this book, especially with all the unique fantasy features McClellan has come up with.  I can’t wait to see how this book comes to an end, but this is already one of my top fantasy books of 2022.

What did you recently finish reading?

Nothing to add in here, hopefully I’ll have a few books finished off by this time next week.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Seventeen by John Brownlow

Seventeen Cover

My plan, after I get through the massive brick that is Fairy Tale, is to dive into some of the intriguing thrillers I have sitting in my to-read pile.  The first one of these that I need to check out is the compelling debut, Seventeen by John Brownlow.  Set to feature a bunch of awesome assassin characters duking it out, Seventeen sounds pretty incredible and I look forward to seeing what happens in it.
