Argylle by Elly Conway (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the fun new novel, Argylle, by the mysterious Elly Conway. An interesting spy thriller that will tie into a 2024 film of the same name, Argylle follows an unusual spy who gets dragged into a sinister conspiracy. I’ve made a bit of progress on Argylle already and it is proving to be a fun and distinctive novel. I’m hoping to finish it off by the weekend and I look forward to seeing how its fantastic story unfolds.

Warhammer 40,000: Dead Men Walking by Steve Lyons (Audiobook)

I was still in the mood for Warhammer 40,000 fiction this week, so I started listening to the exciting and grim audiobook Dead Men Walking. A loose continuation of Lyon’s previous novel Krieg, Dead Men Walking pits the resolute and unfeeling soldiers of the Death Korps of Krieg against the soulless metal Necrons. A gripping war story that shows a grim battle between two implacable and inhuman armies, I am really falling in love with Dead Men Walking and I am absolutely flying through its audiobook format.

I managed to power through Dark Arena this week and it proved to be a particularly impressive spy thriller. The sequel to Beaumont’s debut, The Frenchman, Dark Arena is a gritty and highly authentic novel that expertly captures the true experiences of an intelligence agent. An excellent and powerful read.

Warhammer 40,000: The Fall of Cadia by Robert Rath (Audiobook)

Warhammer 40,000 - The Fall of Cadia Cover

I finally finished the awesome Warhammer 40,000 novel, The Fall of Cadia by Robert Rath this week and boy was it something special. A novelization of one of the key lore moments of Warhammer 40,000 fiction, The Fall of Cadia is a complex and epic war novel, filled with big battles and impressive characters. Rath did an incredible job capturing this massive event, and the resulting story is addictive, exciting and heartbreaking in all the right ways. One of the best books and audiobooks of 2023, I cannot recommend The Fall of Cadia enough.

Rebellion by Simon Scarrow

I am hoping to read the latest Eagles of the Empire book by Simon Scarrow, Rebellion, next. This is one of my favourite historical fiction series and the new novel sounds pretty damn awesome as it thrusts Scarrow’s long-running protagonists into the middle of Boudica’s revolt.

Dark Arena by Jack Beaumont (ebook)

I started reading the early copy of Dark Arena that I have this week. The sequel to Beaumont’s debut, The Frenchman, Dark Arena follows a French intelligence agent as he attempts to uncover a sinister plot. I haven’t made a great deal of progress on Dark Arena yet, but I am so far enjoying seeing another story in Beaumont’s distinctive and meticulous style. This should be a pretty good thriller and I am excited to finish off my first 2024 novel.

Warhammer 40,000: The Fall of Cadia by Robert Rath (Audiobook)

I didn’t end up getting as much listening time as I would have wanted this week so I still haven’t completely finished off the awesome Warhammer 40,000 novel, The Fall of Cadia by Robert Rath yet. A novelization of one of the key lore moments of Warhammer 40,000 fiction, The Fall of Cadia is a complex novel that covers the main moments of the 13th Black Crusade. This is one of most significant Warhammer 40,000 novels of the year and I am very glad that they got Robert Rath to write it as he has been one of the most impressive authors of Warhammer fiction in recent years (check out my reviews for Assassinorum: Kingmaker and The Infinite and the Divine). This is honestly proving to be one of the best Warhammer books of the year and I should knock it off in the next couple of days.

A fun and fast-paced thriller from an unlikely author that I had a good time with, especially as Caine comes up with some very interesting villains.

I am planning to dive into the intriguing novel, Argylle, next. An interesting spy thriller that will tie into a 2024 film of the same name, Argylle should be a fantastic novel and I look forward to checking it out.

Rebellion by Simon Scarrow

Deadly Game by Michael Caine (Trade Paperback)

I started reading the awesome and fun thriller, Deadly Game, this week. Written by legendary actor Michael Caine, Deadly Game has an intriguing plot about an elite police unit chasing down stolen nuclear material. I am about halfway through Deadly Game at the moment, and it is proving to be a rather interesting book in a style that is definitely reminiscent of Michael Caine. I’m rather enjoying Deadly Game and I look forward to seeing how Caine wraps it up.

I have made a ton of progress on The Fall of Cadia this week and this is honestly proving to be one of the best Warhammer books of the year. Intense, full of action and featuring some great characters, The Fall of Cadia is a masterful novel and I am hoping to finish it off in the next week.

I honestly haven’t made any progress since last week on the new murder mystery from Nita Prose, The Mystery Guest. The intriguing sequel to Prose’s first novel, The Maid, The Mystery Guest features another compelling murder, seen through the eyes of Prose’s unique protagonist. I am hoping to finally get to grips with The Mystery Guest this week, but I’ll have to see how I go.

Murtagh by Christopher Paolini (Audiobook)

I made a huge effort and managed to finish off the audiobook version of Murtagh this week. A brilliant continuation of Paolini’s classic Inheritance Cycle novels, Murtagh was a pretty damn awesome read and I loved seeing another novel in this outstanding fantasy world. I am hoping to get a review up for Murtagh soon, and it proved to be quite an outstanding piece of fantasy fiction.

I have just started reading the new murder mystery from Nita Prose, The Mystery Guest. The intriguing sequel to Prose’s first novel, The Maid, The Mystery Guest features another compelling murder, seen through the eyes of Prose’s unique protagonist. I’ve only made a little progress on The Mystery Guest but it is so far proving to be an excellent read with a great set up. I am hoping to finish it off in the next couple of days and I look forward to Prose’s twisty conclusion.

Murtagh by Christopher Paolini (Audiobook)

I am still getting through the new Christopher Paolini novel, Murtagh, although I haven’t made as much progress as I would have liked. The sequel to Paolini’s iconic Inheritance Cycle, Murtagh follows the exploits of the damaged dragon rider Murtagh a year after being freed from the control of his evil lord. I am about two thirds of the way through Murtagh at the moment and I am pretty hooked on the elaborate story that shows a whole new angle to Paolini’s elaborate fantasy world. I am hoping to finish off Murtagh in the next week, but I’ll have to see how I go.

House of Open Wounds by Adrian Tchaikovsky (ebook)

I had an outstanding time getting through Adrian Tchaikovsky’s latest elaborate book, House of Open Wounds. The amazing sequel to Tchaikovsky’s epic and impressive City of Last Chances, House of Open Wounds was such an incredible read, with complex characters, clever scenarios, and a ton of heart. One of the best fantasy novels of 2023, I’m hoping to get a review up for it soon.

A twisty and extremely hilarious Australian murder mystery that makes fun of so many different tropes and conventions of classic crime fiction. Highly recommended!

Vendetta by Sarah Barrie (Trade Paperback)

A brilliantly dark and gritty Australian crime fiction read that pits a maverick police office against the ghosts of her past. One of Barrie’s best books yet!

West Heart Kill by Dann McDorman

The next book I am hoping to dive into is the intriguing murder mystery debut, West Heart Kill by Dann McDorman. An apparently meta-murder mystery, West Heart Kill has an awesome classic murder mystery scenario behind it that McDorman twists to tell a unique story. I have heard some good things about West Heart Kill and I cannot wait to check it out.

I started reading the awesome and hilarious new novel from Australian author Benjamin Stevenson, Everyone on this Train is a Suspect. The impressive sequel to Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone, Everyone on this Train is a Suspect sees the hapless protagonist forced to solve murders at a mystery writers convention on a train where all the participants are suspects capable of getting away with murder. Compelling, unique and fun homage to the various murder mystery sub-genres, this is a great book and I am hoping to knock it off in the next few days.

I managed to knock off the latest Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Creed: Ashes of Cadia by Jude Reid this week. Ashes of Cadia was an excellent and action-packed novel that focused on a damaged protagonist returning to her destroyed home planet. An excellent and compelling book, I’m hoping to get a review up for it soon.

Saevus Corax Deals with the Dead by K. J. Parker (Paperback)

Saevus Corax Deals With the Dead Cover

A clever and hilarious fantasy novel that saw a talented battlefield looter get dragged into world-changing events against his will. Easily one of the most amusing novels of 2023, this book comes highly recommended.

I started the compelling historical novel, Mr Einstein’s Secretary this week and boy am I loving it. The latest book from acclaimed Australian author Matthew Reilly, Mr Einstein’s Secretary follows a young girl who lives through terrible times and becomes a spy, a traitor and the secretary to Einstein. I am about 100 pages in at the moment and cannot wait to see how this awesome novel turns out.

Warhammer 40,000: Creed: Ashes of Cadia by Jude Reid (Audiobook)

I am still enjoying the latest Warhammer 40,000 novels, Creed: Ashes of Cadia by Jude Reid this week. I had hoped to have finished this audiobook by now, but I haven’t had as much listening time as I would have wanted. Despite that, Ashes of Cadia is proving to be an excellent read and I love the complex and action-packed story it contains as the daughter of a legendary war hero as she journeys back to the site of her father’s greatest failure, the fall of Cadia. I should finish this off in the next day or two and I cannot wait to see how it ends.

I had a wonderful time finishing off the excellent new Michael Connelly novel, Resurrection Walk this week. A Lincoln Lawyer novel that also features Connelly’s main protagonist Harry Bosch, Resurrection Walk was an exception book that sees the protagonists try to prove the innocence of several convicted felons. One of Connelly’s best recent books, I loved Resurrection Walk and I am hoping to get a review up for it soon.

The Defector by Chris Hadfield (Trade Paperback)

A compelling and fascinating thriller set during the Cold War from a talented author with some intriguing real-world insights.

The Girl from London by Olivia Spooner (Trade Paperback)

The Girl From London Cover

A moving and compelling historical drama that focuses on a unique World War II event.

Zero Days Since Last Incident by JE Rowney

Zero Days Since Last Incident Cover

I am hoping to quickly read the entertaining sounding thriller, Zero Days Since Last Incident in the next week. Following several ambitious office workers who get stuck on an island with murderous results, Zero Days Since Last Incident sounds pretty damn awesome and I can’t wait to check it out.

I just started reading the excellent new Michael Connelly novel, Resurrection Walk. I managed to get through the new massive historical fiction novel from Ken Follett, The Armour of Light, a lot quicker than I thought I would, especially when I got caught up in its excellent story. Another compelling entry in Follett’s most iconic series, The Armour of Light had a brilliant and gripping story behind it, and this is one of the best historical fiction novels of 2023.

Ghost Story by Jim Butcher (Audiobook)

I also managed to finish off another Dresden Files novel this week with Ghost Story. One of the darker books in the entire series, Ghost Story was a brilliant listen and I deeply enjoying its complex and powerful story.

I started reading the new massive historical fiction novel from Ken Follett, The Armour of Light, this week and I am currently about 100 pages in. Another compelling entry in Follett’s most iconic series, The Armour of Light is off to an interesting start as it examines several great characters during a troubled historical period. I am hoping to finish this off in the next week or so and it is so far proving to be one of the better historical fiction novels of 2023.

Ghost Story by Jim Butcher (Audiobook)

I honestly did not intend to listen to more of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files novels this week, but thanks to the major cliffhanger at the end of Changes, I had to dive into the next book, Ghost Story, as well. One of the darker books in the entire series, Ghost Story is a great listen and I am deeply enjoying it’s complex and powerful story.

An intriguing and entertaining fantasy novel that I really enjoyed. I am hoping to get a review up for it soon and I am also planning to dive into the sequel when I get a chance.

Changes by Jim Butcher (Audiobook)

A particularly brilliant and brutal entry in the Dresden Files series that will have you hooked the entire way through.

The Exchange by John Grisham (Trade Paperback)

An intense and clever new novel from the always dependable John Grisham.

The Night House by Jo Nesbo (Trade Paperback)

A gritty horror thriller with some compelling twists behind it.

If I manage to get through the Follett this week I will probably dive into the new K. J. Parker novel, Saevus Corax Deals with the Dead. What are you currently reading?

Age of Ash by Daniel Abraham (Trade Paperback)

I finally got around to reading Age of Ash, an intriguing fantasy novel from last year by one half of The Expanse writing team, Daniel Abraham. I’ve made a fair bit of progress in Age of Ash and it is proving to be quite an awesome and fun read with a compelling mystery at its heart. I’m hoping to knock Age of Ash off in the next day or so and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Changes by Jim Butcher (Audiobook)

Thanks to a recent holiday I’ve been in the mood for something very easy to listen to and so I continued my dive into the iconic Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I’ve actually made a ton of progress with this series, finishing off two of them in the last week and just starting another with Changes. Changes is off to a really good start so far as Butcher closes out some key storylines and I cannot wait to see how the entire thing unfolds.

A compelling and elaborate fantasy novel I should have tried to read last year.

Small Favour by Jim Butcher (Audiobook)

Probably one of the better Dresden Files books, Small Favour was fun, exciting and re-sparked my addiction to this amazing series.

Turn Coat by Jim Butcher (Audiobook)

Turn Coat Cover

A key and impressive entry in one of the best fantasy series out there.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Armour of Light by Ken Follett

The Armour of Light Cover

I’m hoping to start reading the new massive historical fiction novel from Ken Follett, The Armour of Light, this week. Another compelling entry in Follett’s most iconic series, The Armour of Light promises to be an intense and captivating read that will probably be one of the best historical fiction novels of 2023.
