Deep Black by Miles Cameron (Hardcover)

I managed to start reading the cool science fiction novel, Deep Black by Miles Cameron, although I haven’t made a lot of progress on it yet. The sequel to Cameron’s previous novel, Artifact Space, Deep Black has already had a great start to it, and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

The Dragon in Winter by Jonathan Maberry (Audiobook)

I also finally got around to starting the awesome new Jonathan Maberry epic dark fantasy novel, The Dragon in Winter. This is the third book in Maberry’s Kagen the Damned series, which previously featured Kagen the Damned (one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2022) and Son of the Poison Rose (one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2023) and looks set to bring this series to an end. Loaded with brutal action and a complex, well-written story, The Dragon in Winter is going to be something very fun and I cannot wait to see how this series comes to an end.

What did you recently finish reading?

Endgame by Sarah Barrie (Trade Paperback)

The final book in Barrie’s Lexi Winters series, Endgame was an intense and dark Australian thriller that set an unconventional cop against a deadly killer in a revenge filled game of cat-and-mouse. An outstanding book that wrapped up the series perfectly.

Warhammer 40,000: Da Red Gobbo Collection by Mike Brooks, Denny Flowers and Rhuairidh James (Audiobook)

A particularly epic collection of entertaining Warhammer stories, Da Red Gobbo Collection was really funny, and I had such an amazing time getting through it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso

I’m hoping to start reading the new Melissa Caruso novel, The Last Hour Between Worlds, next. An intriguing and fun sounding fantasy thriller, The House Hour Between Worlds has so much potential, and I cannot wait to see how it turns out.

Endgame by Sarah Barrie (Trade Paperback)

I’m still going with the dark Australian thriller Endgame by Sarah Barrie. The final book in Barrie’s Lexi Winters series, Endgame sets an unconventional cop against a deadly killer in a revenge filled game of cat-and-mouse. I haven’t made as much progress on Endgame as I would have liked, but I am still really enjoying this book, and I cannot wait to see how this series comes to an end.

Warhammer 40,000: Da Red Gobbo Collection by Mike Brooks, Denny Flowers and Rhuairidh James (Audiobook)

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to listen to the awesome Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Da Red Gobbo Collection. A collection of several Warhammer 40,000 novellas and short stories from three talented authors, Da Red Gobbo Collection showcases various tales of the Red Gobbo, a revolutionary grot leading the uprising against their orc leaders. A particularly fun collection of entertaining Warhammer stories, Da Red Gobbo Collection is proving to be really funny, and I am loving the audiobook version of it.

Warhammer 40,000: Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer (Audiobook)

I managed to knock off the Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer this week. A particularly gothic Warhammer 40,000 novel, this was an intense and gripping book that I deeply enjoyed.

Usagi Yojimbo: Volume 39: Ice and Snow by Stan Sakai (Trade Paperback)

As promised, I read the new Usagi Yojimbo comic the second I got my hands on it, and it was so damn awesome. Review to hopefully follow soon.

10 Rules for the Perfect Murder by James Patterson and Chris Tebbetts (Audiobook)

An excellent and entertaining full cast audiobook that I recently powered through on a short road trip.

Deep Black by Miles Cameron

I’m hoping to start up the impressive science fiction novel, Deep Black next. The sequel to Cameron’s previous novel, Artifact Space, Deep Black has a ton of potential, and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

I have just started reading the dark Australian thriller Endgame by Sarah Barrie. The final book in Barrie’s Lexi Winters series, Endgame sets an unconventional cop against a deadly killer in a revenge filled game of cat-and-mouse. I have only made a little progress on Endgame so far, but this will probably end up being one of the best Australian novels of 2024, and I look forward to seeing how the entire story comes together.

Warhammer 40,000: Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer (Audiobook)

I didn’t make as much progress on the new Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer, as I would have liked this week, but I am still really enjoying it. Following on the grim and fanatical Black Templar Space Marine chapter, Broken Crusade really dives into the gothic elements of the Warhammer 40,000 novel to create a distinctive setting. I am hoping to knock off Broken Crusade in the next few days and I cannot wait to see how Fischer brings it to an end.

What did you recently finish reading?

Nobody’s Hero by M. W. Craven (Trade Paperback)

An over-the-top thriller that is easily one of the most entertaining books of 2024. Review to follow soon.

Revenge of Rome by Simon Scarrow (Trade Paperback)

Another outstanding historical fiction outing from Simon Scarrow that had me hooked from the very beginning. Highly recommended.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Usagi Yojimbo: Volume 39: Ice and Snow by Stan Sakai

I’m very excited because I have a copy of the new Usagi Yojimbo volume, Ice and Snow, on its way. One of my favourite comic series, I always deeply enjoy reading the new Usagi Yojimbo comic each year and I cannot wait to finally get my hands on Ice and Snow. Set to feature a gripping new showdown between Usagi and his mortal enemy, the supernatural killer Jei, Ice and Snow should be a particularly epic entry in the series, and I am planning to read it the very second I get my hands on it.

Nobody’s Hero by M. W. Craven (Trade Paperback)

I have started reading the exciting thriller, Nobody’s Hero by M. W. Craven. The sequel to Craven’s previous novel, Fearless, Nobody’s Hero takes the author’s new protagonist on a dangerous mission to London when a mysterious woman from his past reemerges. I am having a blast reading this over-the-top thriller, and it is proving to be one of the most entertaining books of 2024.

Warhammer 40,000: Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer (Audiobook)

I was still in a major Warhammer 40,000 mood so I started listening to the latest release, Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer. Following on the grim and fanatical Black Templar Space Marine chapter, Broken Crusade really dives into the gothic elements of the Warhammer 40,000 novel to create a distinctive setting. I have only listened to a little bit of Broken Crusade so far, and I am looking forward to seeing where this cool book goes.

Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson (Hardcover)

I powered through this cool follow up to Stevenson’s previous books, Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone and Everyone on this Train is a Suspect this week. Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret is another unique murder mystery that sees the dysfunctional protagonist attempt to discover a murderer amongst a group of Christmas performers. Fun, clever and extremely funny.

Warhammer 40,000: Daemonhammer by Darius Hinks (Audiobook)

I also managed to complete this awesome Warhammer 40,000 novel by Darius Hinks, Daemonhammer. An addictive and intense read, I had a brilliant time getting through it.

The Ghosts of August by Peter Watt (Trade Paperback)

An exciting Australian novel with a deep war story behind it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Revenge of Rome by Simon Scarrow

I’ve still got a ton of great 2024 novels to read, but I think the next one I’ll read is the new Simon Scarrow book, Revenge of Rome. A particularly intense entry in the series, Revenge of Rome will see the series protagonists embark on a desperate hunt for a fugitive queen in order to get their revenge. I know I am going to love this book, and I cannot wait to check it out.

Endgame by Sarah Barrie

I am also hoping to read the awesome and dark Australian thriller Endgame by Sarah Barrie. The final book in her Lexi Winters series, Endgame will set an unconventional cop against a deadly killer in a revenge filled game of cat-and-mouse. This will probably end up being one of the best Australian novels of 2024 and I am deeply excited to finally read it.

Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson (Hardcover)

I just started reading the awesome Australian murder mystery novel, Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson. The follow up to Stevenson’s previous books, Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone and Everyone on this Train is a Suspect, Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret is another unique murder mystery that sees the dysfunctional protagonist attempt to discover a murderer amongst a group of Christmas performers. Once again combining a clever investigation with comedy and a satirical look at the murder mystery genre, Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret should be a particularly awesome read and I will probably knock it off in the next day or so.

Warhammer 40,000: Daemonhammer by Darius Hinks (Audiobook)

I am still powering through every 2024 Warhammer 40,000 novel I can, so I just started listening to the new book from Darius Hinks (whose previous novel, Leviathan, was delightfully dark). This new book, Daemonhammer, sets an aging Imperial Inquisitor against deadly hidden forces in an elaborate game of cat and mouse. I haven’t made a lot of progress on Daemonhammer yet, but I am already quite curious about where the plot is going.

What did you recently finish reading?

Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang (Trade Paperback)

I managed to get through the awesome fantasy novel, Blood Over Bright Haven this week, and boy was it awesome. The new book from acclaimed author M. L. Wang, Blood Over Bright Haven was a particularly powerful and inventive fantasy novel that I had such a brilliant time with. Clever, tragic, and filled with some unique fantasy features, Blood Over Bright Haven was so damn good, and I am very glad I decided to check it out.

Darkside by Michael Mammay (Audiobook)

I absolutely powered through the epic science fiction thriller Darkside by Michael Mammay this week as well. The fourth book in Mammay’s Planetside series (made up of Planetside, Spaceside and Colonyside), Darkside brings back the author’s controversial protagonist as he investigates a missing persons case on a moon-based mining colony, run by two companies who have both tried to kill him in the past. This proved to be an excellent and fast-paced book, and I am hoping to get a review up for it soon.

The Ghosts of August by Peter Watt

The next book I am hoping to read is the new Australian historical fiction novel, The Ghosts of August. The final entry in Peter Watt’s Colonial series, The Ghosts of August should be a compelling and exciting book, as the various members of a prominent family deal with the chaos surrounding World War I.

Nobody’s Hero by M. W. Craven

I am also hoping to read the exciting thriller, Nobody’s Hero by M. W. Craven. The sequel to Craven’s previous novel, Fearless, Nobody’s Hero will taking the author’s new protagonist on a dangerous mission to London. I am really looking forward to reading this over-the-top thriller, especially as Craven’s other 2024 novel, The Mercy Chair, proved to be particularly impressive.

Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the intriguing fantasy novel, Blood Over Bright Haven. The new book from acclaimed author M. L. Wang, Blood Over Bright Haven follows intrigue, politics and passionate research in a massive university with a very intriguing magical system. I’ve only made a bit of progress on Blood Over Bright Haven but it is proving to be a pretty awesome read that I think has a ton of potential.

Darkside by Michael Mammay (Audiobook)

I’ve also started listening to the epic science fiction thriller Darkside by Michael Mammay. I managed to finish off the excellent and fast-paced young adult fantasy novel The Heart of the World by Australian author Amie Kaufman. The sequel to The Isles of the Gods, The Heart of the World was a great conclusion to this duology and I’m hoping to get a review up for it soon.

The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne (Audiobook)

I also managed to finish off the epic new John Gwynne book, The Fury of the Gods. The final entry in Gwynne’s Bloodsworn Saga (see my reviews for The Shadow of the Gods and The Hunger of the Gods), The Fury of the Gods was a particularly awesome book that I could not get enough of. Loaded with action and elaborate characters, this was a very strong and impressive fantasy novel and one of my favourite books of 2024.

The Heart of the World by Amie Kaufman (Trade Paperback)

I’ve just started to read the intriguing young adult fantasy novel The Heart of the World by Australian author Amie Kaufman. The sequel to The Isles of the Gods, The Heart of the World takes Kaufman’s teenage protagonists on a dark and intense journey as they try to stop a destructive war while also dealing with two angry gods using them as vessels. The Heart of the World is so far proving to be an intriguing and fast-paced book, and I cannot wait to see how it ends.

The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne (Audiobook)

I also started listening to the new John Gwynne book, The Fury of the Gods. The final entry in Gwynne’s epic and exceptional Bloodsworn Saga (see my reviews for The Shadow of the Gods and The Hunger of the Gods), The Fury of the Gods is a particularly awesome book that I am deeply enjoying. Showcasing the final battle between wrathful gods and a small group of great characters, The Fury of the Gods is very addictive, and I have made a bit of progress on it so far. I am hoping to finish this off in the next week, and while I’m only a few hours in, I am already confident that this will end up being one of my favourite books of 2024.

Buried Deep and Other Stories by Naomi Novik (Trade Paperback)

A great collection of short stories from acclaimed fantasy author Naomi Novik, Buried Deep and Other Stories features an intriguing array of tales from Novik’s various fantasy worlds, including the setting of her next big series. This was an excellent read, and I enjoyed seeing how imaginative Novik can get.

Warhammer 40,000: Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers (Audiobook)

I absolutely powered through Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers this week, it was so damn good. The sequel to one of my favourite Warhammer 40,000 novels, Outgunned, Above and Beyond places the protagonists of the first book, a disgraced propaganda expert and a legendary, if exceedingly cynical, pilot, in a new dangerous situation. A compelling mixture of action, intrigue, and eccentric characters, all while providing a particularly dark look at the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Above and Beyond is an exceptional read and one I will hopefully review soon.

I’ve got a few books to check out in the coming weeks, but the one I think I’ll probably read next is Blood Over Bright Haven. The new book from M. L. Wang, Blood Over Bright Haven will follow intrigue, politics and passionate research in a massive magical university. I think that this book has a ton of potential, not only because I love books set in magical schools, but also because I have heard so much good stuff about Wang and her previous book, The Sword of Kaigen.

I just started reading the intriguing new Naomi Novik book, Buried Deep and Other Stories. A collection of short stories from the acclaimed fantasy author, Buried Deep and Other Stories features an intriguing array of tales from Novik’s various fantasy worlds, including the setting of her next big series. I have already gotten through the first story and it proved to be a lot of fun. I will hopefully get through the rest of the book pretty quickly and I look forward to seeing what other great adventures it contains

Warhammer 40,000: Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers (Audiobook)

I was still in a massive Warhammer 40,000 mood this week, so I started listening to Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers, which I had been really looking forward to. The Waiting by Michael Connelly (Trade Paperback)

Another outstanding novel from Connelly. Featuring three fantastic major protagonists, The Waiting had some very clever mysteries in it, and this was one of the best crime fiction reads of 2024.

Warhammer 40,000: Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer (Audiobook)

Another outstanding Warhammer 40,000 novel that focused on a unique faction in the game, Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer was a particularly intriguing and compelling novel that I could not get enough of. Review to hopefully follow soon.

How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler (Trade Paperback)

One of the funniest and most compelling fantasy novels of 2024. I loved this comedic take on the classic heroic tale, especially as Wexler made it very over-the-top in all the right ways.

Rebellion by Richard Cullen (ebook)

An excellent and exciting historical fiction novel that focused on an intriguing period of English history. I had a lot of fun with Rebellion, especially as I was in the mood for a fun and entertaining historical adventure.

The Waiting by Michael Connelly (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the new Michael Connelly novel The Waiting. The latest book from Connelly to feature his awesome police protagonists, Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch, The Waiting sees them team up to investigate another series of intriguing cases, including an infamous cold case murder. Set to be one of the best crime fiction reads of 2024, I have been really excited for The Waiting and I cannot wait to see how this twisty mystery unfolds.

Warhammer 40,000: Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer (Audiobook)

I also started listening to one of the latest Warhammer 40,000 novels, Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer. The second book from Beer following their excellent 2023 debut, The King of the Spoil, Dominion Genesis sees Beer follow the mechanical and inhuman tech priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus as they attempt to survive a devastating alien invasion. I haven’t gotten too far into Dominion Genesis yet, but it’s so far been an interesting start. I look forward to seeing how this entire novel comes together, and I am eager for more Warhammer awesomeness.

High Wire by Candice Fox (Trade Paperback)

An exciting and explosive Australian thriller, High Wire was an excellent read and I am hoping to write a review for it soon.

A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan (Audiobook)

I absolutely powered through the audiobook version of the new Anthony Ryan fantasy novel A Tide of Black Steel this week. A sequel to Ryan’s The Covenant of Steel trilogy (The Pariah, The Martyr and The Traitor), A Tide of Black Steel was an epic read that I could not get enough of. An outstanding novel and one of my favourite fantasy books of 2024 so far.

How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler

I’ve got several great books to read at the moment, but I think I’ll try to read the hilarious sounding novel, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler next. A comedic take on the classic tale of good vs evil, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying will follow a hero who keeps dying in a time loop as they finally snap and decide to become an evil dark lord to survive. I love the sound of this funny and cool fantasy novel, and I know I am going to have a ton of fun reading it.

What are you currently reading:

High Wire by Candice Fox (Trade Paperback)

I didn’t make as much progress with High Wire as I’d hoped this week. The latest book from Candice Fox, High Wire is an exciting Australian thriller with some real bang behind it. I’m hoping to devote a bit more time to High Wire in the next week and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan (Audiobook)

I’ve started listening to the amazing new fantasy novel A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan. A sequel to Ryan’s The Covenant of Steel trilogy (The Pariah, The Martyr and The Traitor), A Tide of Black Steel is an epic read that takes some great new characters on an amazing adventure. I am absolutely powering through A Tide of Black Steel, and I should hopefully have it finished by this time next week.

What did you recently finish reading?

Warhammer 40,000: Lazarus: Enmity’s Edge by Gary Kloster (Audiobook)

I quickly finished off the awesome Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Lazarus: Enmity’s Edge by Gary Kloster this week. An impressive and epic read, I deeply enjoyed this exceptional audiobook, and I am hoping to get a review up for it soon.

Warhammer 40,000: Double Eagle by Dan Abnett (Audiobook)

It turns out I was in a real Warhammer 40,000 mood this week as I also quickly listened to the awesome book Double Eagle by Dan Abnett. A spin-off from Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts series, Double Eagle is an exceptional novel about aerial combat that I couldn’t get enough off. This was one of the best Warhammer novels I have ever read, and I will be reviewing it very soon.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Waiting by Michael Connelly

I am really hoping to read the new Michael Connelly novel The Waiting this week. The latest book from Connelly to feature his awesome police protagonists, Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch, The Waiting will see them team up to investigate another series of intriguing cases, including an infamous cold case. Set to be one of the best crime fiction reads of 2024, I have been really excited for The Waiting and I cannot wait to see what twisty mysteries Connelly has written this time.

Warhammer 40,000: Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer

Finally, if I get through A Tide of Black Steel this week, I will probably start listening to one of the latest Warhammer 40,000 audiobooks, Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer. An intriguing read that will follow a member of the Adeptus Mechanicus as they attempt to save their world from an alien invasion, I think Dominion Genesis has a lot of potential, especially as Beer really impressed me with his debut, The King of the Spoil, last year.
