What are you currently reading:

On the Edge by Kate Horan (Trade Paperback)

This week I started to read the intriguing new Australian crime fiction novel, On the Edge by Kate Hora, next.  Set in smalltown Australia, On the Edge follows a damaged protagonist who returns to her old hometown, years after her best friend was murdered. I’ve made a fair bit of progress with On the Edge so far, and it is proving to be an excellent and compelling read. I’m hoping to finish On the Edge off in the next few days and I cannot wait to see how it turns out.

Warhammer 40,000: Vagabond Squadron by Robbie MacNiven (Audiobook)

I was still in a Warhammer 40,000 mood this week, so I decided to check out the late 2025 release, Vagabond Squadron. The new book from impressive Warhammer author Robbie MacNiven (whose previous novel Oaths of Damnation I deeply enjoyed), Vagabond Squadron is an exciting read that follows an elite squadron of transport pilots who are forced through hell in the grimdark battlegrounds of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I have been powering through the audiobook version of Vagabond Squadron this week and I’m hoping to finish it off very soon.

What did you recently finish reading?

Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashino (Trade Paperback)

I managed to finish off the debut novel from Marisa Kashino, Best Offer Wins, this week.  A very fun and entertaining thriller about obsession and desperation in the current housing market, Best Offer Wins was an outstanding novel, and one I had such an amazing time getting through.

Warhammer 40,000: Demolisher by Andy Clark (Audiobook)

I also finished off Warhammer 40,000 novel Demolisher by Andy Clark this week. The sequel to Steel Tread, Demolisher was another outstanding Warhammer 40,000 novel filled with great characters, desperate situations and some amazing tank battles.  An epic book I’m hoping to review soon.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Trespassers by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez

While I have several awesome books to read at the moment, including some great early 2026 releases, the next book I’m intending to read is the late 2025 young adult thriller The Trespassers.  This new thriller from Jennifer Lynn Alvarez is an amazing sounding novel that will follow a group of teens as they try to cover up the events of a deadly party in the Alaskan wilderness.  I have been looking forward to reading The Trespassers for a while, especially after deeply enjoying Alvarez’s previous young adult thrillers, Lies Like Wildfire and Friends Like These, and I am sure this is going to be another gripping novel.

Book Haul – 22 December 2025

I’ve had an excellent couple of weeks for books, as I was lucky enough to receive some incredible and amazing new novels from publishers and Netgalley.  These novels include some truly awesome new releases, including books that have the potential to be some of my top reads of the new year.  I cannot wait to dive into them, and I so excited to see how they all turn out.

Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums by Stan Sakai

The first new book I want to highlight in this Book Haul post is the awesome Usagi Yojimbo comic volume, Ten Thousand Plums by Stan Sakai. An excellent new volume in one of my favourite comic series, Ten Thousand Plums features two excellent new stories that sees the titular rabbit ronin continue to encounter trouble in his treks across feudal Japan. I have already read this outstanding new volume and it was another deeply impressive read with some real emotional heart to it. A truly incredible comic and a great starting point for this post.

The Trespassers by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez

I was also very happy to receive a copy of the young adult thriller The Trespassers from Jennifer Lynn Alvarez. An amazing sounding novel that will follow a group of teens as they try to cover up the events of a deadly party in the Alaskan wilderness.  I have been looking forward to reading The Trespassers for a while, especially after deeply enjoying Alvarez’s previous young adult thrillers, Lies Like Wildfire and Friends Like These, and I am sure this is going to be another gripping novel.

The Gambler by J. P. Pomare

The next book I recently received is the intriguing 2026 thriller, The Gambler.  The upcoming novel from acclaimed Australian author J. P. Pomare, The Gambler will see the author’s returning private investigator protagonist investigate deadly political violence. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Pomare’s previous books, and I am very keen to try out his next book in the new year.

The Delivery by Gregg Hurwitz

While thriller author Gregg Hurwitz has a full novel coming out in 2026, with his next Orphan X entry Antihero, I was very happy to find out that he was also releasing a cool sounding novella with The Delivery. A somewhat more science fiction focused novel than his typical work, The Delivery will see a struggling family deal with the attention of a murderous AI, in what is sure to be an exciting and captivating read.

Red Star Rebels by Amie Kaufman

Australian author Amie Kaufman looks set to continues to dominate the young adult genre in 2026 with her new science fiction novel Red Star Rebels. A cool sounding science fiction adventure set on futuristic Mars, Red Star Rebels will see two fractious teens attempt to stop a deadly explosion and the mercenaries behind it. I’m sure this is going to be a very fun read, and I’m keen to check it out.

A Sociopath’s Guide to a Successful Marriage by M. K. Oliver

Up next we have a very fun sounding debut, A Sociopath’s Guide to a Successful Marriage, that will see a murderous housewife attempt to cover up her deadly deeds while also achieving her other ambitious designs for herself and her family. I really loved the sound of this book’s fantastic plot, and I have a feeling it is going to be a very special debut.

Payback by Elizabeth Rose Quinn

The final new book I recently received is the entertaining thriller Payback by Elizabeth Rose Quinn. Another novel that looks set to blend mystery with humour, Payback will see the seven inmates of a luxury weekend prison attempt to solve the murder of their abusive guard before they lose their cushy arrangement. I really love Payback’s fantastic plot, and I cannot wait to read it next year.

Welcome to my weekly segment, Waiting on Wednesday, where I look at upcoming books that I am planning to order and review in the next few months and which I think I will really enjoy.  Stay tuned to see reviews of these books when I get a copy of them.  For this week’s Waiting on Wednesday, I check out a very cool upcoming young adult thriller I know I’m going to have a great time with, The Trespassers by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez.

Jennifer Lynn Alvarez is an interesting author who burst onto the young adult thriller scene a few years ago with her debut thriller, Lies Like Wildfire.  Following a group of teenagers accidently responsible for burning down their small town, Lies Like Wildfire was a captivating and intense read that examined how far some of the teenagers were willing to go to ensure they didn’t get sent to jail.  Lies Like Wildfire was an outstanding novel that was ideal for both older teenage readers and general thriller fans, and it ended up being one of my top debuts of 2021.

Due to how much I enjoyed Lies Like Wildfire, I made sure to grab Alvarez’s second thriller novel the following year with Friends Like These.  Focussing on the consequences of a series of bad and criminal decisions made during a drunken party in response to a teenage rivalry, Friends Like These was another exceptional novel that provided some intriguing insights into the modern teenage mind, while also showing the life-long consequences young mistakes can have.  Both Lies Like Wildfire and Friends Like These were among some of the better young adult thrillers I have had the pleasure of reading, and I have been eager to get my hands on Alvarez’s next entry to the genre.

Well, it looks like I don’t have too much longer to wait, as Alvarez has her next young adult thriller coming out in a couple of months with The Trespassers.  Set for release in October 2025, The Trespassers will once again follow a group of complex teenagers as they try to cover up a dark mistake from the past.  This time set in Alaska, The Trespassers has a very interesting plot behind it, and I firmly believe that this is going to be one of the more compelling and intense young adult novels of 2025.

Plot Synopsis:

In the frozen depths of an Alaskan winter, a house party turns deadly in this tightly wound thriller packed with icy suspense and devastating secrets.
