Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the intriguing fantasy novel, Blood Over Bright Haven. The new book from acclaimed author M. L. Wang, Blood Over Bright Haven follows intrigue, politics and passionate research in a massive university with a very intriguing magical system. I’ve only made a bit of progress on Blood Over Bright Haven but it is proving to be a pretty awesome read that I think has a ton of potential.

Darkside by Michael Mammay (Audiobook)

I’ve also started listening to the epic science fiction thriller Darkside by Michael Mammay. The fourth book in Mammay’s Planetside series (made up of Planetside, Spaceside and Colonyside), Darkside brings back the author’s controversial protagonist as he investigates a missing persons case on a moon-based mining colony, run by two companies who have both tried to kill him in the past. I’ve made a bit of a dent in Darkside so far and I am getting pretty drawn into its compelling story. I’m hoping to get through Darkside in the next week and I cannot wait to see how it unfolds.

What did you recently finish reading?

The Heart of the World by Amie Kaufman (Trade Paperback)

I managed to finish off the excellent and fast-paced young adult fantasy novel The Heart of the World by Australian author Amie Kaufman. The sequel to The Isles of the Gods, The Heart of the World was a great conclusion to this duology and I’m hoping to get a review up for it soon.

The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne (Audiobook)

I also managed to finish off the epic new John Gwynne book, The Fury of the Gods. The final entry in Gwynne’s Bloodsworn Saga (see my reviews for The Shadow of the Gods and The Hunger of the Gods), The Fury of the Gods was a particularly awesome book that I could not get enough of. Loaded with action and elaborate characters, this was a very strong and impressive fantasy novel and one of my favourite books of 2024.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson

I’ve got several awesome books to check out in the next few weeks, but I think I’ll start by diving into the awesome Australian murder mystery novel, Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson. The follow up to Stevenson’s previous books, Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone and Everyone on this Train is a Suspect, Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret is going to be an amazing read loaded with mystery, comedy and over-the-top characters.

The Heart of the World by Amie Kaufman (Trade Paperback)

I’ve just started to read the intriguing young adult fantasy novel The Heart of the World by Australian author Amie Kaufman. The sequel to The Isles of the Gods, The Heart of the World takes Kaufman’s teenage protagonists on a dark and intense journey as they try to stop a destructive war while also dealing with two angry gods using them as vessels. The Heart of the World is so far proving to be an intriguing and fast-paced book, and I cannot wait to see how it ends.

The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne (Audiobook)

I also started listening to the new John Gwynne book, The Fury of the Gods. The final entry in Gwynne’s epic and exceptional Bloodsworn Saga (see my reviews for The Shadow of the Gods and The Hunger of the Gods), The Fury of the Gods is a particularly awesome book that I am deeply enjoying. Showcasing the final battle between wrathful gods and a small group of great characters, The Fury of the Gods is very addictive, and I have made a bit of progress on it so far. I am hoping to finish this off in the next week, and while I’m only a few hours in, I am already confident that this will end up being one of my favourite books of 2024.

What did you recently finish reading?

Buried Deep and Other Stories by Naomi Novik (Trade Paperback)

A great collection of short stories from acclaimed fantasy author Naomi Novik, Buried Deep and Other Stories features an intriguing array of tales from Novik’s various fantasy worlds, including the setting of her next big series. This was an excellent read, and I enjoyed seeing how imaginative Novik can get.

Warhammer 40,000: Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers (Audiobook)

I absolutely powered through Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers this week, it was so damn good. The sequel to one of my favourite Warhammer 40,000 novels, Outgunned, Above and Beyond places the protagonists of the first book, a disgraced propaganda expert and a legendary, if exceedingly cynical, pilot, in a new dangerous situation. A compelling mixture of action, intrigue, and eccentric characters, all while providing a particularly dark look at the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Above and Beyond is an exceptional read and one I will hopefully review soon.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang

I’ve got a few books to check out in the coming weeks, but the one I think I’ll probably read next is Blood Over Bright Haven. The new book from M. L. Wang, Blood Over Bright Haven will follow intrigue, politics and passionate research in a massive magical university. I think that this book has a ton of potential, not only because I love books set in magical schools, but also because I have heard so much good stuff about Wang and her previous book, The Sword of Kaigen.

Buried Deep and Other Stories by Naomi Novik (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the intriguing new Naomi Novik book, Buried Deep and Other Stories. A collection of short stories from the acclaimed fantasy author, Buried Deep and Other Stories features an intriguing array of tales from Novik’s various fantasy worlds, including the setting of her next big series. I have already gotten through the first story and it proved to be a lot of fun. I will hopefully get through the rest of the book pretty quickly and I look forward to seeing what other great adventures it contains

Warhammer 40,000: Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers (Audiobook)

I was still in a massive Warhammer 40,000 mood this week, so I started listening to Above and Beyond by Denny Flowers, which I had been really looking forward to. The sequel to one of my favourite Warhammer 40,000 novels, Outgunned, Above and Beyond places the protagonists of the first book, a disgraced propaganda expert and a legendary, if exceedingly cynical, pilot, in a new dangerous situation. What did you recently finish reading?

The Waiting by Michael Connelly (Trade Paperback)

Another outstanding novel from Connelly. Featuring three fantastic major protagonists, The Waiting had some very clever mysteries in it, and this was one of the best crime fiction reads of 2024.

Warhammer 40,000: Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer (Audiobook)

Another outstanding Warhammer 40,000 novel that focused on a unique faction in the game, Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer was a particularly intriguing and compelling novel that I could not get enough of. Review to hopefully follow soon.

How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler (Trade Paperback)

One of the funniest and most compelling fantasy novels of 2024. I loved this comedic take on the classic heroic tale, especially as Wexler made it very over-the-top in all the right ways.

Rebellion by Richard Cullen (ebook)

An excellent and exciting historical fiction novel that focused on an intriguing period of English history. I had a lot of fun with Rebellion, especially as I was in the mood for a fun and entertaining historical adventure.

The final book in Gwynne’s epic and exceptional Bloodsworn Saga (see my reviews for The Shadow of the Gods and The Hunger of the Gods), The Fury of the Gods has so much awesome potential and it will probably end up being one of my favourite fantasy books of 2024.

The Waiting by Michael Connelly (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the new Michael Connelly novel The Waiting. The latest book from Connelly to feature his awesome police protagonists, Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch, The Waiting sees them team up to investigate another series of intriguing cases, including an infamous cold case murder. Set to be one of the best crime fiction reads of 2024, I have been really excited for The Waiting and I cannot wait to see how this twisty mystery unfolds.

Warhammer 40,000: Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer (Audiobook)

I also started listening to one of the latest Warhammer 40,000 novels, Dominion Genesis by Jonathan D. Beer. The second book from Beer following their excellent 2023 debut, The King of the Spoil, Dominion Genesis sees Beer follow the mechanical and inhuman tech priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus as they attempt to survive a devastating alien invasion. I haven’t gotten too far into Dominion Genesis yet, but it’s so far been an interesting start. I look forward to seeing how this entire novel comes together, and I am eager for more Warhammer awesomeness.

High Wire by Candice Fox (Trade Paperback)

An exciting and explosive Australian thriller, High Wire was an excellent read and I am hoping to write a review for it soon.

A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan (Audiobook)

I absolutely powered through the audiobook version of the new Anthony Ryan fantasy novel A Tide of Black Steel this week. A sequel to Ryan’s The Covenant of Steel trilogy (The Pariah, The Martyr and The Traitor), A Tide of Black Steel was an epic read that I could not get enough of. An outstanding novel and one of my favourite fantasy books of 2024 so far.

How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler

I’ve got several great books to read at the moment, but I think I’ll try to read the hilarious sounding novel, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler next. A comedic take on the classic tale of good vs evil, How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying will follow a hero who keeps dying in a time loop as they finally snap and decide to become an evil dark lord to survive. I love the sound of this funny and cool fantasy novel, and I know I am going to have a ton of fun reading it.

I didn’t make as much progress with High Wire as I’d hoped this week. The latest book from Candice Fox, High Wire is an exciting Australian thriller with some real bang behind it. I’m hoping to devote a bit more time to High Wire in the next week and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan (Audiobook)

I’ve started listening to the amazing new fantasy novel A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan. A sequel to Ryan’s The Covenant of Steel trilogy (The Pariah, The Martyr and The Traitor), A Tide of Black Steel is an epic read that takes some great new characters on an amazing adventure. I am absolutely powering through A Tide of Black Steel, and I should hopefully have it finished by this time next week.

Warhammer 40,000: Lazarus: Enmity’s Edge by Gary Kloster (Audiobook)

I quickly finished off the awesome Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Lazarus: Enmity’s Edge by Gary Kloster this week. An impressive and epic read, I deeply enjoyed this exceptional audiobook, and I am hoping to get a review up for it soon.

Warhammer 40,000: Double Eagle by Dan Abnett (Audiobook)

It turns out I was in a real Warhammer 40,000 mood this week as I also quickly listened to the awesome book Double Eagle by Dan Abnett. A spin-off from Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts series, Double Eagle is an exceptional novel about aerial combat that I couldn’t get enough off. This was one of the best Warhammer novels I have ever read, and I will be reviewing it very soon.

I just started reading the awesome new Australian thriller High Wire by Candice Fox. Fox’s third book of 2024, High Wire is an exciting thriller with some real bang behind it. I’ve only read a little of High Wire so far, but I am enjoying its high-octane narrative, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Warhammer 40,000: Lazarus: Enmity’s Edge by Gary Kloster (Audiobook)

I’ve spent most of this week listening to the awesome Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Lazarus: Enmity’s Edge by Gary Kloster. An impressive and epic read that follows a company of the Dark Angels to a mysterious planet, Enmity’s Edge has proven to be an exceptional read, loaded with intensity, conspiracy and compelling characters. I have deeply enjoyed this exceptional audiobook, and I am hoping to finish it off in the next day or so.

I just started reading the latest Mitch Rapp novel, Capture or Kill. The first book in this long-running series written by new author Don Bentley, Capture or Kill is so far proving to be a great addition to the series that sets the protagonist against a dangerous new enemy. The first 50 pages of this book have proven to be very interesting, and I am curious to see how the rest of Capture or Kill unfolds.

What did you recently finish reading?

Terra Incognita by Simon Turney (ebook)

A fantastic novel that follows a squad of Roman soldiers looking to find the source of the Nile, Terra Incognita was a fun and engrossing read I couldn’t get enough of.

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman (Audiobook)

I just finished the audiobook version of the new Richard Osman novel, We Solve Murders. An intriguing murder mystery set outside of Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, We Solve Murders was an incredible read, that is easily one of the best things I have read in 2024 so far.

An Eye for an Eye by Jeffrey Archer (ebook)

An outstanding, fast-paced and compelling new novel from Jeffrey Archer that sets his long-running protagonists against several criminal enterprises, including the machinations of their deadly rival.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Death on the Tiber by Lindsey Davis

Death on the Tiber Cover

While I have a few potential books to read next, I am hoping to finally dive into the new Lindsey Davis novel, Death on the Tiber. The latest book in Davis’ long-running Flavia Albia historical murder mystery series, Death on the Tiber will see the series’ protagonist investigate another complex murder in ancient Rome, this time while dealing with demons from her past. I really love this amazing series, and I have no doubt I will have a wonderful time reading Death on the Tiber.

I have started reading the intriguing historical read, Terra Incognita by Simon Turney this week. A fantastic novel that follows a squad of Roman soldiers looking to find the source of the Nile, Terra Incognita is Turney’s second book of 2024 (he also released the fantastic novel Agricola: Invader), and it is proving to be an excellent and addictive read.

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman (Audiobook)

I have also started listening to the audiobook version of the new Richard Osman novel, We Solve Murders. An intriguing murder mystery set outside of Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, We Solve Murders has a very compelling plot, and I cannot wait to see how it unfolds. I only just started We Solve Murders relatively recently, but I am already very invested in it.

Warhammer 40,000: Daemonbreaker by Jude Reid (Audiobook)

An excellent and powerful Warhammer 40,000 novel that takes the franchises’ nuns with guns on a desperate adventure.

An Eye for an Eye by Jeffrey Archer

While I have several books I want to read next, I think I’ll start by diving into the new Jeffrey Archer book, An Eye for an Eye. The latest book in his William Warwick series, An Eye for an Eye will see the series protagonists investigate a complex murder case, while also battling the malign influence of a sinister art thief with a grudge against them. The William Warwick books always prove to be a ton of fun and I have no doubt that this latest entry is going to keep me very entertained.

I started reading the entertaining thriller The Wrong Hands by Mark Billingham. A unique English crime fiction read with a distinctive protagonist, The Wrong Hands is so far proving to be a pretty enjoyable novel, and I look forward to seeing how it comes together.

Warhammer 40,000: Daemonbreaker by Jude Reid (Audiobook)

I also just started listening to the latest Warhammer 40,000 novel, Daemonbreaker by Jude Reid. Following a warrior nun as she becomes involved in a great conflict, Daemonbreaker should prove to be a pretty fantastic read. I really enjoyed Reid’s first novel, Creed: Ashes of Cadia (one of my favourite debuts of 2023), and I cannot wait to see how the author’s second outing turns out.

What did you recently finish reading?

Precipice by Robert Harris (Trade Paperback)

A very compelling book that perfectly covers an infamous World War I scandal involving the British prime minister. Precipice was a pretty intriguing and unique read, and I had a fantastic time getting through it.

Warhammer 40,000: Oaths of Damnation by Robbie MacNiven (Audiobook)

An excellent audiobook that features an intense and captivating story around the infamous Exorcists chapter of Space Marines. Exciting, powerful, and highly recommended to Warhammer fans.

Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett (Audiobook)

I finally got around to listening to the new audiobook version of one of my favourite Discworld novels, Guards! Guards!. Featuring a fantastic cast, this new version of Guards! Guards! was really fun to listen to, and it proved to be the perfect accompaniment for a road trip.

Precipice by Robert Harris (Trade Paperback)

I started reading the historical thriller Precipice this week. The new book from the always outstanding Robert Harris, Precipice covers an infamous World War I scandal involving the British prime minister. I have made a little bit of progress on Precipice already and I am loving the author’s deep dive into the controversial events surrounding this scandal.

Warhammer 40,000: Oaths of Damnation by Robbie MacNiven (Audiobook)

I didn’t get a lot of time to listen to audiobooks this week, so I’m still going with the entertaining Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Oaths of Damnation by Robbie MacNiven. Following the infamous Exorcists chapter of Space Marines, Oaths of Damnation sees the Exorcists attempt to track down a dangerous daemon before it reveals their chapter’s darkest secrets. Despite my slow progress, this is a very awesome audiobook and I look forward to seeing how it all comes together.

King’s Enemy by Ian Ross (Trade Paperback)

The final book in the de Norton trilogy, King’s Enemy was everything I hoped it would be and more. An outstanding final entry in a trilogy that previously featured the awesome books Battle Song and War Cry, King’s Enemy saw the protagonist, now declared a traitor, fight in England’s most infamous siege. This was an extremely epic historical novel, and I am hoping to get a review up for it soon.

The Death of Dora Black by Lainie Anderson (Trade Paperback)

A great Australian historical mystery, set around the British Empire’s first female police officer.

I have several amazing books to check out next, but I think I’ll quickly dive into the entertaining thriller The Wrong Hands by Mark Billingham. This book sounds like a ton of fun, and I have no doubt that I am going to have an outstanding time getting through it.
