The Ascent by Adam Plantinga (Paperback)

I’ve started reading the awesome thriller The Ascent by Adam Plantinga this week.  One of the more exciting debuts of 2024, The Ascent has been on my to-read list for a while, due to its fun plot about a former cop forced to fight his way out of a rioting prison.  I’ve made a bit of progress on The Ascent so far and it is proving to be an intense and compelling book.  I am hoping to finish The Ascent off in the next few days, and I look forward to seeing what craziness happens as I get through it.

Four Ruined Realms by Mai Corland (Audiobook)

I am still enjoying the 2025 fantasy novel, Four Ruined Realms by Mai Corland this week.  The sequel to the awesome Five Broken BladesFour Ruined Realms sees a group of deadly killers and rogues once again try to work together to pull off an impossible mission.  Loaded with action, fun characters, and some entertaining tension, Four Ruined Realms is proving to be a very worthy sequel to Five Broken Blades, and I am currently halfway through it.  I should knock it off in the next week and I cannot wait to see what cool twists or devilish reveals Corland has in store for us.

Death on the Tiber by Lindsey Davis

Death on the Tiber Cover

While I have a few potential books to read next, I am hoping to finally dive into the 2024 Lindsey Davis novel, Death on the Tiber.  The latest book in Davis’ long-running Flavia Albia historical murder mystery series, Death on the Tiber will see the series’ protagonist investigate another complex murder in ancient Rome, this time while dealing with demons from her past.  I really love this amazing series, and I really regret not reading Death on the Tiber sooner.

Gunnawah by Ronni Salt (Trade Paperback)

I finally got the chance to start reading the thrilling 2025 Australian debut novel, Gunnawah by Ronni Salt. An intriguing crime fiction read, Gunnawah provides a compelling and unique look at a turbulent region of Australia during the 1970s through the eyes of some entertaining characters. I am currently about halfway through Gunnawah at the moment and I am hoping to finish it off in the next couple of days.

Four Ruined Realms by Mai Corland (Audiobook)

I just started listening to the awesome 2025 fantasy novel, Four Ruined Realms by Mai Corland.  The sequel to the awesome Five Broken Blades, Four Ruined Realms sees a group of deadly killers and rogues once again try to work together to pull off an impossible mission.  Loaded with action, fun characters, and some entertaining tension, Four Ruined Realms is proving to be a very worthy sequel to Five Broken Blades, and I have made a fair bit of progress on it so far.

I managed to finish off the new Melissa Caruso novel, The Last Hour Between Worlds, this week. An amazing fantasy thriller, The Last Hour Between Worlds so much fun to read, and I got so caught up in its unique plot.  Highly recommended!

Warhammer 40,000: Titanicus by Dan Abnett (Audiobook)

I absolutely powered through the classic Warhammer 40,000 audiobook Titanicus, this week. Set in author Dan Abnett’s iconic Sabbat Worlds Crusade overarching series (which also features the Gaunt’s Ghosts books and Double Eagle), Titanicus explores a war in the Warhammer 40,000 universe fought primarily with giant Titan war machines. An overall exceptional book that is a must read for all Warhammer fans; I am hoping to get a review up for this one soon.

The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso (Trade Paperback)

I have made a fair bit of progress on the new Melissa Caruso novel, The Last Hour Between Worlds, this week. An amazing fantasy thriller, The Last Hour Between Worlds follows an investigator who finds themself trapped in a deadly party with murder, monsters and a time loop.  I am about halfway through The Last Hour Between Worlds at the moment, and I love its awesome concept and fun story.  I look forward to seeing how the entire book comes together, and this is proving to be an outstanding read.

Warhammer 40,000: Titanicus by Dan Abnett (Audiobook)

I was the mood for something particularly awesome to start 2025 with so I decided to listen to the classic Warhammer 40,000 audiobook Titanicus. Set in author Dan Abnett’s iconic Sabbat Worlds Crusade overarching series (which also features the Gaunt’s Ghosts books and Double Eagle), Titanicus explores a war in the Warhammer 40,000 universe fought primarily with giant Titan war machines.  I have made a fair bit of progress on Titanicus already and it is proving to be a very epic and impactful read that covers the destructive machine war at multiple intriguing levels.  An overall exceptional book to start the year with.

Warhammer: The Horus Heresy: Eidolon: The Auric Hammer by Marc Collins (Audiobook)

I managed to quickly power through the short Warhammer audiobook, Eidolon: The Auric Hammer by Marc Collins this week.  Part of The Horus Heresy series, Eidolon: The Auric Hammer was an entertaining read focused on an intriguing and deranged traitor Space Marine. A fun listen with an awesome story behind it.

I have started reading the new Melissa Caruso novel, The Last Hour Between Worlds, this week. I managed to finish off Deep Black by Miles Cameron, this week.  The sequel to Cameron’s previous novel, Artifact SpaceDeep Black was an elaborate and highly detailed science fiction novel that I found extremely addictive.

The Dragon in Winter by Jonathan Maberry (Audiobook)

I also finally finished off the awesome new Jonathan Maberry epic dark fantasy novel, The Dragon in Winter.  The third book in Maberry’s Kagen the Damned series, which previously featured Kagen the Damned (one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2022) and Son of the Poison Rose (one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2023) this book was loaded with brutal action, damaged characters, some very dark elements and a complex, well-written story.  An incredible book that I hoping to review soon.

Deep Black by Miles Cameron (Hardcover)

I have made a fair bit of progress to the cool science fiction novel, Deep Black by Miles Cameron, this week and it is proving to be pretty damn awesome.  The sequel to Cameron’s previous novel, Artifact SpaceDeep Black follows the crew of a massive human trading ship that finds itself under attack by warring alien factions.  An elaborate and highly detailed read that is extremely addictive, Deep Black is an outstanding read that I am hoping to knock off in the next few days.

I am also powering through the awesome new Jonathan Maberry epic dark fantasy novel, The Dragon in Winter.  This is the third book in Maberry’s Kagen the Damned series, which previously featured Kagen the Damned (one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2022) and Son of the Poison Rose (one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2023) and looks set to bring this series to an end.  Loaded with brutal action, damaged characters, some very dark elements and a complex, well-written story, The Dragon in Winter is an incredible book that I honestly cannot stop listening to.  I’m about halfway through The Dragon in Winter at the moment and I am going to make a big effort to finish it off in the next week, as I cannot wait to see how this incredible series comes to an end.

I haven’t managed to get through any books this week, as I am still getting through two lengthy novels I started at the end of last week.  I am hopeful that I will be able to feature a few finished reads in this section next week, as there are still a few great books I want to finish off in 2024.

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to listen to the awesome Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Da Red Gobbo Collection.  A collection of several Warhammer 40,000 novellas and short stories from three talented authors, Da Red Gobbo Collection showcases various tales of the Red Gobbo, a revolutionary grot leading the uprising against their orc leaders.  A particularly fun collection of entertaining Warhammer stories, Da Red Gobbo Collection is proving to be really funny, and I am loving the audiobook version of it.

I didn’t make as much progress on the new Warhammer 40,000 audiobook, Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer, as I would have liked this week, but I am still really enjoying it.  Following on the grim and fanatical Black Templar Space Marine chapter, Broken Crusade really dives into the gothic elements of the Warhammer 40,000 novel to create a distinctive setting.  I am hoping to knock off Broken Crusade in the next few days and I cannot wait to see how Fischer brings it to an end.

Usagi Yojimbo: Volume 39: Ice and Snow by Stan Sakai

I’m very excited because I have a copy of the new Usagi Yojimbo volume, Ice and Snow, on its way.  One of my favourite comic series, I always deeply enjoy reading the new Usagi Yojimbo comic each year and I cannot wait to finally get my hands on Ice and Snow.  Set to feature a gripping new showdown between Usagi and his mortal enemy, the supernatural killer Jei, Ice and Snow should be a particularly epic entry in the series, and I am planning to read it the very second I get my hands on it.

Craven.  The sequel to Craven’s previous novel, FearlessNobody’s Hero takes the author’s new protagonist on a dangerous mission to London when a mysterious woman from his past reemerges.  I am having a blast reading this over-the-top thriller, and it is proving to be one of the most entertaining books of 2024.

I was still in a major Warhammer 40,000 mood so I started listening to the latest release, Broken Crusade by Steven B. Fischer.  Following on the grim and fanatical Black Templar Space Marine chapter, Broken Crusade really dives into the gothic elements of the Warhammer 40,000 novel to create a distinctive setting.  I have only listened to a little bit of Broken Crusade so far, and I am looking forward to seeing where this cool book goes.

Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson (Hardcover)

I powered through this cool follow up to Stevenson’s previous books, Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone and Everyone on this Train is a Suspect this week. Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret is another unique murder mystery that sees the dysfunctional protagonist attempt to discover a murderer amongst a group of Christmas performers.  Fun, clever and extremely funny.

Revenge of Rome by Simon Scarrow

I’ve still got a ton of great 2024 novels to read, but I think the next one I’ll read is the new Simon Scarrow book, Revenge of Rome.  A particularly intense entry in the series, Revenge of Rome will see the series protagonists embark on a desperate hunt for a fugitive queen in order to get their revenge.  I know I am going to love this book, and I cannot wait to check it out.

I just started reading the awesome Australian murder mystery novel, Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret by Benjamin Stevenson.  The follow up to Stevenson’s previous books, Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone and Everyone on this Train is a SuspectEveryone This Christmas Has A Secret is another unique murder mystery that sees the dysfunctional protagonist attempt to discover a murderer amongst a group of Christmas performers.  Once again combining a clever investigation with comedy and a satirical look at the murder mystery genre, Everyone This Christmas Has A Secret should be a particularly awesome read and I will probably knock it off in the next day or so.

Warhammer 40,000: Daemonhammer by Darius Hinks (Audiobook)

I am still powering through every 2024 Warhammer 40,000 novel I can, so I just started listening to the new book from Darius Hinks (whose previous novel, Leviathan, was delightfully dark). This new book, Daemonhammer, sets an aging Imperial Inquisitor against deadly hidden forces in an elaborate game of cat and mouse.  I haven’t made a lot of progress on Daemonhammer yet, but I am already quite curious about where the plot is going.

Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang (Trade Paperback)

I managed to get through the awesome fantasy novel, Blood Over Bright Haven this week, and boy was it awesome.  The new book from acclaimed author M. L. Wang, Blood Over Bright Haven was a particularly powerful and inventive fantasy novel that I had such a brilliant time with.  Clever, tragic, and filled with some unique fantasy features, Blood Over Bright Haven was so damn good, and I am very glad I decided to check it out.

Darkside by Michael Mammay (Audiobook)

I absolutely powered through the epic science fiction thriller Darkside by Michael Mammay this week as well.  The fourth book in Mammay’s Planetside series (made up of PlanetsideSpaceside and Colonyside), Darkside brings back the author’s controversial protagonist as he investigates a missing persons case on a moon-based mining colony, run by two companies who have both tried to kill him in the past.  This proved to be an excellent and fast-paced book, and I am hoping to get a review up for it soon.

The Ghosts of August by Peter Watt

The next book I am hoping to read is the new Australian historical fiction novel, The Ghosts of August.  The final entry in Peter Watt’s Colonial series, The Ghosts of August should be a compelling and exciting book, as the various members of a prominent family deal with the chaos surrounding World War I.

Nobody’s Hero by M. W. Craven

I am also hoping to read the exciting thriller, Nobody’s Hero by M. W. Craven.  The sequel to Craven’s previous novel, Fearless, Nobody’s Hero will taking the author’s new protagonist on a dangerous mission to London.  I am really looking forward to reading this over-the-top thriller, especially as Craven’s other 2024 novel, The Mercy Chair, proved to be particularly impressive.
