A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett (ebook)

I started reading the exceptional fantasy murder mystery, A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett this week and boy is it awesome.  The sequel to Bennett’s 2024 novel, The Tainted Cup (one of my favourite books of 2024), A Drop of Corruption sees the author’s entertaining protagonists investigate another impossible crime in a land constantly under attack from giant monsters.  An outstanding and compelling read that perfectly combines a complex mystery with Bennett’s inventive fantasy elements, A Drop of Corruption is so damn good and this will probably end up being one of my top books of 2025.

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins (Audiobook)

I also just started listening to the audiobook version of the new Hunger Games novel, Sunrise on the Reaping.  An intriguing novel set before the original trilogy, Sunrise on the Reaping will follow a fan favourite character from the books and films as he goes through his own deadly Hunger Games.  I have only made a little progress on this audiobook so far, but I am already very intrigued to see where this is going.

Burn to Shine by Jonathan Maberry (Audiobook)

I managed to finish off the epic new Jonathan Maberry audiobook, Burn to Shine this week, and boy was it awesome. The fourth book in Maberry’s Rogue Team International series (Rage, Relentless and Cave 13), Burn to Shine was a brutal and deeply intense thriller loaded with action and an elaborate plot that I couldn’t stop listening to.  Highly recommended and I am hoping to get a review up for it soon.

When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi (ebook)

I absolutely powered through the highly entertaining new novel from John Scalzi, When the Moon Hits Your Eye this week. A hilarious novel with a unique plot behind it, When the Moon Hits Your Eye was so much fun and I am really glad I got the chance to read it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Pacific Heights by S. R. White

I have a few books I’m hoping to start in the next week and the first of them will probably be Pacific Heights by S. R. White.  An intriguing Australian murder mystery, Pacific Heights will see detectives try to unravel the different stories from five witnesses who each saw the same murder take place.  I look forward to unwrapping White’s outstanding story and Pacific Heights promises to be an impressive read.

How to Slay on Holiday by Sarah Bonner (ebook)

I’ve started reading the very entertaining thriller, How to Slay on Holiday.  The cool new book from Sarah Bonner, who previously impressed me with Her Perfect Twin and Her Sweet Revenge, How to Slay on Holiday sees a woman take her entire extended family on an exclusive vacation to set up her alibi for her husband’s upcoming murder.  However, between escalating family issues, various secrets and hidden agendas, nothing goes the way she plans.  I am having a lot of fun with How to Slay on Holiday and it is proving to be an excellent and twisty read.  I should finish it off this weekend and I cannot wait to see how it turns out.

Burn to Shine by Jonathan Maberry (Audiobook)

I am still going very strong with the epic new Jonathan Maberry audiobook, Burn to Shine. The fourth book in Maberry’s Rogue Team International series (Rage, Relentless and Cave 13), Burn to Shine is a brutal and deeply intense thriller loaded with action and an elaborate plot that sees some of the worst enemies from the series return in a destructive way.  Intense, dark and highly captivating, I am really enjoying this epic novel and Burn to Shine will probably end up being one of my favourite books and audiobooks of 2025.

The White Fortress by Boyd and Beth Morrison (ebook)

I ended up powering through the compelling historical thriller The White Fortress from Boyd and Beth Morrison this week.  The follow-up to The Lawless Land and The Last True Templar, The White Fortress was a very exciting novel with some amazing historical details around it.   Review to hopefully follow soon.

I’m hoping to start listening to the highly entertaining new novel from John Scalzi, When the Moon Hits Your Eye next. An awesome sounding novel with a unique plot behind it, When the Moon Hits Your Eye sounds like so much fun and I cannot wait to start reading it.

The White Fortress by Boyd and Beth Morrison (ebook)

I’ve just started reading the compelling historical thriller The White Fortress from Boyd and Beth Morrison.  The follow-up to The Lawless Land and The Last True Templar, The White Fortress is an exciting novel that sees two unlikely heroes attempt to save a small town from invasion by uncovering a journal written by Marco Polo.  I’ve made a bit of progress on The White Fortress, and it is proving to be an excellent addition the series and I cannot wait to finish it off.

Star Wars: Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed (Audiobook)

I managed to finish off the cool new Star Wars audiobook, The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed, which follows the early day of the Emperor’s reign. A very intriguing addition to the Star Wars canon loaded with cool lore and some compelling political commentary, this was a very excellent book to check out.

The Reunion by Bronwyn Rivers (Trade Paperback)

I just started reading the intriguing new Australia debut, The Reunion.  Set in the Blue Mountains (a location I have a lot of love for), The Reunion follows a group who return to the scene of their friend’s death and find their dark secrets coming to the surface. I haven’t made too much progress with The Reunion yet, but I am already very intrigued by the mystery and cannot wait to see how it unfolds.

I am still enjoying the cool new Star Wars audiobook, The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed.  The first book in the outstanding Reign of the Empire trilogy, The Mask of Fear follows the early day of the Empire’s reign, as several key supporting characters attempt to fight back against it in various ways.  I am about two thirds through The Mask of Fear at the moment, and I am hoping to finish it off this week.  It will be very interesting to see how this outstanding book comes together, and I am really enjoying this cool read.

I powered through the new Harlan Coben book, Nobody’s Fool, on the weekend, and it proved to be quite an exceptional read. A captivating and brilliant novel, Nobody’s Fool comes very highly recommended, and I am hoping to have a review up for it soon.

I started reading the very interesting crime fiction book, Little Red Death, this week.  A compelling read that sees an obsessed detective try to solve a series of fairytale-themed murders, Little Red Death has an amazing story behind it, and I am really glad I decided to check it out.

Warhammer 40,000: Interceptor City by Dan Abnett (Audiobook)

I have just started listening to the awesome Warhammer 40,000 novel, Interceptor City by Dan Abnett.  The sequel to Abnett’s classic Warhammer 40,000 novel, Double Eagle, Interceptor City brings back the protagonist from the previous book and sets her on a deadly new flying mission against skilled enemy pilots.  I have so much love for Double Eagle, and I am expecting Interceptor City to be just as incredible, especially as Abnett is extremely skilled at writing elaborate air combat sequences.  I have only made a little progress on Interceptor City so far, but I am really loving it and I have no doubt that this will be one of the best books I read all year.

Small Gods by Terry Pratchett (Audiobook)

Thanks to a road trip I’ve been in a real Discworld mood lately, which saw me get through the new audiobook version of Small Gods by Terry Pratchett narrated by Andy Serkis. This was an exceptional listen and Small Gods remains one of my favourite Discworld books.

I had an exceptional time this week powering through the new book from Australian author Joanna Jenkins, The Bluff.  A clever and twisty crime fiction read that serves as an excellent sequel to Jenkin’s debut novel, How to Kill a Client, The Bluff was an amazing read that I look forward to reviewing soon.

Unhallowed Halls by Lili Wilkinson (ebook)

I just started reading Unhallowed Halls by Lili Wilkinson.  A fun young adult dark academia novel that sees a young protagonist investigate a mysterious Scottish boarding school with a demonic edge to it, Unhallowed Halls sounded very entertaining, and I have really enjoyed Wilkinson’s other young adult books in the past (see my reviews for The Erasure Initiative and After the Lights Go Out). I’ve only made a little progress on Unhallowed Halls so far, and I look forward to uncovering the complete complex narrative soon.

Days of Shattered Faith by Adrian Tchaikovsky (Audiobook)

I also started to listen to the audiobook version of the new Adrian Tchaikovsky novel, Days of Shattered Faith.  The third book in Tchaikovsky’s Tyrant Philosophers series, Days of Shattered Faith follows two damaged diplomats from an unpopular empire as they try to navigate a crazy foreign city.  I had so much fun with the previous entries in this series, City of Last Chances and House of Open Wounds, both of which were amongst my favourite books of 2023 (with City of Last Chances being one of the best audiobooks of 2023), and I have been looking forward to Days of Shattered Faith for a while now.  I have made a bit of progress with this book, and it is proving to be a particularly captivating read, loaded with unique characters and an imaginative and elaborate setting.  I am hoping to finish this book off in the next week or so, and Days of Shattered Faith is proving to be a very exceptional book.

I managed to finish off the excellent debut thriller An Ethical Guide to Murder by Jenny Morris this week. A powerful and intriguing book set around an interesting plot premise, An Ethical Guide to Murder was a very fun novel that leaves you thinking about the ethics of murder.

Warhammer 40,000: Leontus: Lord Solar by Rob Young (Audiobook)

I also managed to knock off the audiobook version of Leontus: Lord Solar this week.  The second Warhammer 40,000 book from Young, who previously impressed me with his debut novel Longshot, Leontus: Lord Solar was a very compelling and exciting read that was really worth checking out.

Crusade by Richard Cullen

If I get a chance in the next week, I’ll probably read the upcoming historical fiction book Crusade by Richard Cullen.  The sequel to Cullen’s awesome 2024 novel, Rebellion, Crusade will follow the rogue knight protagonist from Rebellion as he attempts to prove himself in the crusades.  I really enjoyed the first book in this series and I cannot wait to see how Cullen continues the story in Crusade.

An Ethical Guide to Murder by Jenny Morris (ebook)

I started reading the excellent debut thriller An Ethical Guide to Murder by Jenny Morris. Set around a woman with the ability to redistribute life force, the book sees her come up with her own guide to taking life as she attempts to balance the karmic scales. I haven’t made too much progress with An Ethical Guide to Murder yet, but the first 50 pages of it were a lot of fun. I will hopefully power through this book in the next few days, and I cannot wait to see how it turns out.

Death on the Tiber by Lindsey Davis (Trade Paperback)

I finally managed to finish reading the 2024 Lindsey Davis novel, Death on the Tiber.  The latest book in Davis’ long-running Flavia Albia historical murder mystery series, Death on the Tiber saw the protagonist investigate another complex murder in ancient Rome, this time while dealing with demons from her past.  I had an exceptional time with this book, and it proved to be an amazing addition to the series.

Warhammer 40,000: The Emperor’s Finest by Sandy Mitchell (Audiobook)

I also powered through the entertaining Warhammer 40,000 novel, The Emperor’s Finest this week. Part of the amazing Ciaphas Cain series, The Emperor’s Finest follows a highly pragmatic protagonist as he finds himself thrust into the horrors of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.  Another very awesome entry in the series, The Emperor’s Finest is very funny and I had such a great listening to it.

Mickey7 by Edward Ashton (Audiobook)

Thanks to a productive road trip I also finished listening to the entertaining science fiction novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton.  An excellent book that follows the misadventure of duplicated clones who no longer want to die, Mickey7 is proved to be an outstanding book and I’m glad I read it before the movie came out.

I finally managed to start reading the 2024 Lindsey Davis novel, Death on the Tiber.  The latest book in Davis’ long-running Flavia Albia historical murder mystery series, Death on the Tiber sees the protagonist investigate another complex murder in ancient Rome, this time while dealing with demons from her past.  I am having an exceptional time with this book, and I am hoping to knock it off tonight.

Warhammer 40,000: The Emperor’s Finest by Sandy Mitchell (Audiobook)

I was in the mood for something fun this week, so I started listening to another entertaining Warhammer 40,000 novel, The Emperor’s Finest.  Part of the amazing Ciaphas Cain series, The Emperor’s Finest follows a highly pragmatic protagonist as he finds himself thrust into the horrors of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.  Another very awesome entry in the series, The Emperor’s Finest is very funny and I am powering through it.

Mickey7 by Edward Ashton (Audiobook)

I also started listening to the entertaining science fiction novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton this week while on a road trip.  An excellent book that follows the misadventure of duplicated clones who no longer want to die, Mickey7 is proving to be an outstanding book and I’m very glad I decided to check it out.

What did you recently finish reading?

The Ascent by Adam Plantinga (Paperback)

I powered through the awesome thriller The Ascent by Adam Plantinga this week.  One of the more exciting debuts of 2024, The Ascent followed former cop forced to fight his way out of a rioting prison.  This was an incredible and deeply thrilling novel that I had a brilliant time read, make sure to check out my review for it here.

Four Ruined Realms by Mai Corland (Audiobook)

I also managed to finish off the 2025 fantasy novel, Four Ruined Realms by Mai Corland this week.  The sequel to the awesome Five Broken Blades, Four Ruined Realms sees a group of deadly killers and rogues once again try to work together to pull off an impossible mission.  Loaded with action, fun characters, and some entertaining tension, Four Ruined Realms was a very worthy sequel to Five Broken Blades. An Ethical Guide to Murder by Jenny Morris

I have several awesome books to read next, but I think I’m going to check out the excellent thriller An Ethical Guide to Murder by Jenny Morris. Set around a woman with the ability to redistribute life force, the book sees her pull together her own guide to taking life as she attempts to balance the karmic scales. I really love the sound of this book, and I cannot wait to read it.
